445SM Crimping Q?
«

Well by 11:30am I'll be reloading for the 445sm using:
Starline Brass
CCI Mag Pistol Primer
300gr. XTP
Win. 296
It seems that the 296 is working well for everyone from what I've read.
So instead of trying to reinvent the wheel I'll start with it.
Here is my Q. How much crimp are you guys using on your loads? If any at all.
Ow ya if at all possible would you Okies please keep the rain for awhile so I can get some range time in today.
If the rain stops I'll get some chrony reports and accuracy reports posted later this afternoon.
Thanks Warf

A strong crimp will indeed be needed for this type of load.

I am using a heavy crimp, just because that is what I always have used with 296, but in revolvers, rifles may be different could be enough neck tention for good ignition

Ditchdigger
My reloading manual calls out a Large Magnum Pistol Primer.
I loaded 5 of each LMP and LRS primers with the same powder charge so I'll see what the difference is if any.
I'll post my FPS and accuracy on both later today(if the rain bands stop) if my dad ever gets home.
Thats wear the chrony and range is at his place.

I shot a few over the chrony today. Hornady 240 xtp's start load of H110. Manual calls for 1200 fps from a 8" pistol, mine averaged 1900 from the handi. Shot a few Lee 310 cast boolits with a start load of AA1680 average 1609 fps. Using mag pistol primers and just enough crimp to take away the flare. I'm really happy with those velocities, hopefully make it to a range one of these days for some accuracy tests.
