Tell me 'bout Harrisburg, PA

:D Howdy,

Just found out I'll be stationed at Carlisle Barracks just east of Harrisburg from Aug 06 to Jul 07 -- you have no idea how excited I am to be going there and away from DC  .

Anything anyone can share with me about the area?.  I've read before about Pennsyvania's legendary deer hunting.  How hard is it for a newcomer to get onto a deer lease or find somewhere to duck hunt?  I've got a teenage daughter and son who are both just starting to get into hunting -- squirrels down so far.

Honestly, Harrisburg is not that great of a city. It's like Scranton, PA (which is not bad but nothing special either). I dunno about the hunting but it's not that great of a city to live in 8)

Hi Matt,

I live in Carlisle. The area has a fair amount of state forest and state game lands within a 10 to 40 minute drive of Carlisle. The Tuscarora State Forest alone covers 6 neighboring counties and over 91,000 acres. There are also a good many farms in the area that may grant you permission to hunt if you ask. Mostly this area has good deer, squirrel, turkey, grouse, and rabbit hunting. Bear are making their way into the south central counties also. Hunting leases are not really that popular here yet. I can't comment on duck hunting as I have never hunted ducks. I have included links to DCNR for the state forests and the PA Game commission websites.

Welcome to the area.

Thanks guys.

Buckbeast -- I really appreciate the links.  Looks like quite a bit of public land to explore.

Hey Matt,
I grew up in the Harrisburg area and have lived south of Pittsburgh for the past 24 years. I have always said that Carlisle is one of the nicest towns in PA. As far as the Burg is concerned, it's all of the city most people need -- especially if you love the outdoors and hate traffic. I'm assuming that's the part of DC that you won't miss? Your wife and daughter will have plenty of places to shop but you will never be far from the woods. That's a good combination in my book. Enjoy the area and the hunting.

Craig,

You're right on the money.  I live well south of DC so my kids go to decent schools without all the gang/drug/violence problems...and the commute gets old fast.  45-90 minutes each way..and sometimes worse.

I'm looking forward to Carlisle
