powder question
« on: October 11, 2005, 09:24:35 PM »
I have recently aquired a small can of Winchester 473AA ball powder propellant. I was told this was discontinued in 2000. Why? Is it safe to use? Are there any recipies for 12g and 20g target loads for remington STS/gun club hulls? I have Winchester 209 primers and AA12 wads. More importantly, my 20g wads are bAir supreme wads 200 long wads. Can I use any of this stuff?

I would apprieciate any help.

In the 12ga you could use 23.5gr 473AA with the WinAA12 wad and Win 209 primer for a 1200fps 1-1/8oz load.  If you are willing to buy wads for the 20ga you could use the following load.  17.5gr 473AA with the Rem RXP20 wad and the Win209 primer for a 1200fps 7/8oz load.
Good Shooting,

Kenny,

It was a very popular powder for the 20ga and also people liked it for the 12ga for a Live Pigeon load of 1-1/4oz at 1220fps.  I use to use quite a few Win powders for shotguns and rifle but no longer as Win is always discontinuing them.  I can remember exactly when it was discontinued but it was probably 8 to 10 years ago now.
Good Shooting,
George

I loved it and sure hated to see it discontinued. I started using it back when I could get it in 10 pound cans for $26. Talk about a fantastic buy. It was one of the most versatile of shotgun powders and being a ball powder easy to meter.

Winchester developed a new line of powders as manufacturers are want to do. So they dumped the old ones. I think it's Super Field that is a near twin of it tho. Not positive on that but I think that's the one.

Graybeard,

Win never replaced 540 and 571 and I don't think their new powders which replaced 452AA and 473AA don't hold a candle to the powders they replaced.  Also they had 785 which was an excellent powder in many cartridges and dropped it and the replacement was ok but then they dropped that.  I don't remember Alliant or IMR doing any of those antics and that is why I don't bother with Win powders anymore.  In my opinion they cut their throat when they replaced the AA compression hull with the HS hull and I use all STS cases now except for the "Old style AAs" which I have.
Good Shooting,
George
