I think its a  money making scheme for the Game Commision. I mean, you have to do a lottery  in order to get the liscense. And when you send your money in, sometimes you don't get your liscense, and the Game Commision keeps your money. And then they have a guide to tell you where to go. I like to get a elk, because they look alot easier to catch then deer, but I'm  not going to  waste my money on a lottery, just to get a elk lisence.

Then you are NOT gonna hunt elk. Licenses are draw only pretty much every where. I think Colorado may still sell some few over the counter. I think every where else it's draw or forget it.

I have fun with it! I look at my application fee as a donation to the Game Commission, and maybe they can purchase more public hunting lands!
I know it's a slim chance to get pulled, but my chance  is as good as the next guy's! And getting better every year!
It's up to the individual if they want to use a guide or not.  A personal friend can apply to be a guide, too. They just have to attend a training session. The deadline for applications for guide is Oct. 14.
It would be great to pull a tag for elk, that would probably be the only way I'll ever get to hunt them!

I tried the first year, but will have to try again in the coming years. I would love to bag one of those puppies, they are beautifull animals. Jack.

Many states have lotteries for limited game hunts, not just PA and the elk.  There is a good reason why PA's elk is a lottery license and I support it whole heartedly.  The native elk PA elk was driven to extinction because of poaching and open hunting.  What we have today was brought in many years ago from out west.

The rather small entry fee is well worth it, even if your name isn't drawn.   We are fortunate that we have elk today, and that small entry fee helps manage the stock.   I feel without it, the elk could go the way of the native elk or the bison that once roamed here at a time long ago(not just the Great Plains).

I'm with deb, I see it as a donation and part of the process for regulation.

Also known as Eastern Elk, the original PA Elk were a little smaller than western elk and were chocolate brown in color. It is hard to believe they were all wiped out, but I think the last one was shot near St.Mary`s,PA. in the 20`s or 30`s. Peple really didn`t get it for along time. People get it now, but developement is the big problem now, not attitude. Jack.
