Anybody every tried 60 gr Nosler partitions in your 223 Contender? What load did you use and how was accuracy?

I have been shooting a contender 16" carbine rifle for deer season the last 6 years. I tried some 60gr Nosler's but my rifle did not shoot them well I think it was to heavy for the twist. I am not sure if the rifle twist is the same as the pistol barrel. I am shooting trophy bonded bear claws 55gr now and have taken 5 bucks and 3 doe's so far perfect bullet performance complete pass throughs with lung shots and a nice 25 to 50 cent size exit hole. Short recovery distance on all the deer also.

Thanks for the reply terry-1. My barrel is a Super 16 full bull. Not sure what the twist rate is, but I believe the 55 gr are going to be best in my barrel as well. I'm just not crazy about the price tag on those trophy bonded bullets. Witch that much cost, I'll just stick with my 7-30 for deer. The 55 gr Nosler BT's shoot excellent in my barrel, but not sure if I even want to attempt to use them on deer.

Yes they are proud of those bear claws and the price shows it. My buddy who owns the local gun shop told me the prices were lowered on the bear claw bullets according to last weeks update on his wholeseller link. I didn't ask the new price as I already have about 5 years worth sitting at home.

You might want to try the Speer 70 grain soft point.
This bullet is shaped such that it gives acceptable accuracy out of even 1 in 12 twist barrels.
Does not cost an arm and a leg either.
Let you know that the max listing in the Speer reloading manual for Win 748 for this bullet was too hot for my AR15 but was fine in my Mini-14.
Use the starting load and work up slowly.

I've shot some of the 70 gr Speer bullets, and they didn't shoot well at all. I've gotten the 60 gr Partitions to do about a 3 1/2" 5 shot group @ 100 yds, but that's nothing like the sub 1/2" groups I've gotten w/ 55 gr Nosler BTs. I've got about 15 partition bullets left to try. If I can't get them to start grouping better, I'll just continue to make ragged holes with the BTs. Is there anything special about the Sierra Gameking bullets. They make one that comes in a 55 gr for the 223.

mkee, the sierra 55 gr. spitzer flat base should work on deer and the hornady 55 gr. spitzer flat base the one with out the cannalure. I have shot deer with the .223 with 55 gr. hollow points that I have swaged myself using sierra jackets and pure lead cores with good results. I've also shot deer with the 22 hornet using the sierra 45 gr. semi sptizer hornet bullet, one shot kills.

I've tried them with 27 gr of Varget and they worked out to 1/2 groups in the carbine barrel. I haven't tried them in the S14 barrel yet.

BTW, 55gr VMaxs shot the same POI with 27gr of Varget.
