H&R 1871 Target Model Rifle loads for Cowboy Action Shoo
« on: October 14, 2005, 08:01:46 AM »
Anyone out there have Cowboy loads for the 38-55?  Also your feelings on this particular rifle.  I have heard that the trigger needs to be fine tuned.  What do you recommend?  Hey, thanks for the welcome I received for joining your site.  Had a quick response.

My target classic 38-55 came with a really nice trigger, for a feild-use gun.  Read up on the 38-55 here and follow the innovative techniques laid out and you'll have a ball with it.

It was a long row to hoe getting mine shooting good but I really like it now.  Lotsa thump for not a lot of recoil.

I have both the 38-55 and the 45-70.

It is my humble opinion that by far, the 38-55 is the better piece.  I base this on both performance and "look".  The "Target" simply has the right "look".  I get a lot of positive comments from non H&R shooters. (some with very high end rifles)  They all agree, the H&R Target is a very nicely turned out rifle.

I shoot cast loads using Pyrodex RS.  Currently I'm dropping 55 grs of FF over a # 210 Large Rifle primer, Winchester brass, a .30 veg wad (soaked in bore butter) and I top it off with a 249 gr Lyman # 375248 cast lead bullet sized to .378.

I have found these to be VERY accurate, low recoil and one heck of a lot of fun to make and shoot.  Clean-up however is mandatory!!!!

Good luck and please remember that the load mentioned is not recommended nor endorsed by any manufacturer nor is it proven to be safe..  It is simply what I have put togeather and is NOT recommended and is only listed here for reference.  Thanks.

Sorry you asked about loads- I'm shooting 240gn laser-cast bullets sized .380" I buy locally from an outfit called Oregon Trail bullet company.

Sportsman's warehouse has them for $32/500 bullets-I'm shooting them at 1900 fps without excessive leading.

27 grains of AA2230 and a WLP primer in WW cases.  This is just a load that shoots mediocre-1.5" at 50, shot over sandbags.

I haven't really had time to wring out the best accuracy I'm satisfied with this level of accuracy for now.
