I see that Gander mountain has a NEF 12 gauge rifled barrel pump for $179. Sounds like a bargain. But then again, I am one who knows that you get what you pay for in this world. So I am thinking that its quality might be slightly less than other shotguns. I need something that will simpley shoot sabots accurately out to say 150 yards.

This whole gun is cheaper than buying a rifled barrel for my 870 magnum.

Any owners of this gun want to back it up?

Well...if you want a Chinese nock off of a 870...then I guess it would be ok...but if I were you...I wouldn't look any further than a 20ga or 12 ga. Ultra Slug Hunter...IMHO...about the only dedicated slug gun than will rival the accuracy you will get with either 2...would be a Tar-Hunt...The old Browning bolt actions slug guns and a few Savage bolt actions slug guns will come close...but not really beat them...at least in the ones I've had..

I don't think you will get many to back up that Chinese pumpgun.

here are my suggestions:

1) get a H&R Ultra Slugger or Tracker II. The Ultra Slugger might have the edge on accuracy at 150 yards but the Tracker II is much lighter if you carry it all day instead of hunting mostly from a stand. There are those here that regularly shoot their Ultra's at 150-200 yards.

2) If you MUST have a pump with a rifled barrel (why?, when one shot with an Ultra will do the job) get a Hastings barrel for your 870....

i will probably be lamb-basted for this but.......

my friend and bird hunting buddy, pete, has one of the NEF pumps. he loves it. i have shot it and it shoots as good as any other pump gun.

personally, i am not a fan of the chinese government or any pump gun, but pete uses his for birds, sporting clays, geese and ducks, all with one barrel and his opinion is that the gun is worth every penny he spent on it.

you can't go by the chinese made argument and live in the USA, if so, you'll be wearing nothing but homemade clothes, have no electronics, and the list goes on. i have heard people say that NEF pump gun sales directly supports the chinese army, well wake up, everything we buy from china supports the godless commie army !

i think he paid about 150 bucks or so for it, and the funny thing is that rain or shine, mud or weeds, it never jambs, always fires, and has the most bland looking piece of wood for a stock and forearm that i have ever seen.

if it fits your budget and you like the gun, get it. although i do respect mac'sand MSPRET's opinions and advice too !

I have to concur with Mac and msp Ret on this. I think you would be very well served by a tracker or ultra and you'd be buying a U.S.A. made product. Scattergunner makes a good point about a lot of what we wear and use in day to day life being made in China. The only reason you'll see made in china in my house is because it is the only choice in many cases. This is not the case here. There is tracker will handle your slug shooting tasks quite admirably and it's cheaper! The ultra can be had at wal-mart for around $200.00 and I have never heard a negative thing about the accuracy of that gun.The only complaint I ever remember about the ultra is the weight. The only negative thing I can recall anyone saying about the tracker is felt recoil. I've never heard a single thing good or bad about the chinese pump as far as shooting slugs. If you look back through the threads on this forum and read what everyone has posted about their trackers and ultra slug gun I think you might forget all about that chinese 870 clone and pick up an H&R/NEF. Keep those dollars at home in the U.S. when you can and especially in a case like this when there are some great U.S. made alternatives

well i guess ill fess up and admit to owning one of these pump shotguns. Bought it new last year and ill admit it is a cheap gun but it hasnt let me down. i am actually pretty pleased with it although i dont use it for slug hunting.

I think that that if I was in the market for a pump shotgun I would spend my money on a second hand Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 before buying one of these cheap imports. Both the Mossberg and Remington have a long track record and very good reputation. Plus there are tons of accessories including aftermarket barrels and stocks available for either of them. Just my :money:

I agree with Brett's comments.

Spend the jack on a good used Remington M870 Wingmaster or Express, or a Mossberg if you like those.

I have a real aversion against cheap, unknown pump shotguns!

I was a sporting goods retail clerk/gun dept mngr in college, and would recommend staying with a popular and dependable model that's easy to maintain and fix, and get parts for when necessary.

Plus the Remington's and Mossberg's are top choices to modify and trick out whether in the hunting fields or clay ranges, or for combat/home defense.

Stay with a known and proven model! Don't try to save a buck and get screwed. My $.02.
