Picked-up TWO Savages recently.....
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:47:25 AM »
Not by design but, sometime these things happen.  First up is a Savage Springfield 67D 12 gauge in good shape.  The bore is excellent but the outside is missing a lot of the bluing and is a bit pitted, too bad the previous owner(s) didn't take care of the outside as well as the inside!  The barrel is 28" Modified and takes 2 3/4 only, strange.  Next is the Savage Sporter 23-B in 25-20.  Rifling is crisp and it shoots fantastic, 5 shots into .75" at 50 yards with 60 grainers.  I have not yet tried the 86 grain but I have read that they shoot better.  I have bullets, dies, brass, and primers....just got to find some Winchester 680!  I guess AA-1680 is about the same, I'll have to look into that.  The barrel is 24" and the stock has the Schnable tip not the later rounded one.  Serial number is 84xxx, I have a magazine ad from 1928 for the rifle and it has the rounded stock so I can only guess that this one was made before then.  I did read that 15,400 of each 25-20 and 32-20 were made and a bit more in Hornet.
I aim to please - but often miss.

I am a little curious about the serial number range for these guns. I have a 32/20 with the ser. # being in the 11,000's and a 25/20 in the 37,000's. Both have a schnable forend but I've seen these with the round forend as well so I know the two exist.
RicMic, AA1680 is as close as it gets to W680. You are going to absolutely love this caliber in a bolt gun. My 25/20 is scoped and it's a blast to shoot.

I have a 67E in 20 gauge, full choke.  My dad gave it to me for my 12th birthday.  24 years later, it is still the only shotgun I own.  I don't think I could find a better gun for grouse and chukar(maybe a better looking one).

Flash, I am guessing again but I think that Savage used the same serial numbers for the whole Sporter line including 22LR's (about 110,000 of those made) and used whatever number was next for a run of whatever was needed.  In a book I read about Savage, it broke down the amounts of the different Sporters, but not what numbers made in what years.  I've searched for a few months now to no avail (and my wife is a librarian).  Azmike, You're right a tad homely but built like a tank.  Mine will see considerable action.
