Hog hunting in CA (Bay Area)
« on: October 15, 2005, 06:03:15 PM »
I have a quick question about hog hunting in California (Bay area / I live in Marin).  I have been hunting deer, duck, quail etcÂ… for the last 25 years on the east coast (SC).  I moved to the west coast 5 yrs ago and am looking for a good place to try hog hunting.

The two questions I have are:

-   Caliber recommendations (I use both pistol and rifle)
-   Locations in driving distance(s) from the Bay area.

Many Thanks,

Mark

Hi California mark,

Try trophychasers.com, they list a couple of places to hunt hogs in central california.

I haven't went on a hunt with them yet, but I've been thinking of giving them a call for a hunt this winter sometime.

Welcome to California.  You're in Marin County and looking for a place to hunt Wild Boar, Blacktail Deer, Black Bear and the like?  Drive north on 101 until you reach the city of Ukiah.  On the east side of Ukiah you have Cow Mountain  Recreation Management Area.  60,000 plus acres of BLM(Bureau of Land Management) land open to the public.  Once you get to Ukiah on Hwy.  101 take the Talmage exit.  Go east on Talmage Road about 1.5 miles.  Turn right at East Side Road.  Travel less than 0.5 mile to Mill Creek Road, which is on the left.  Continue on Mill Creek Road 3 miles to turnoff for the North Cow Mountain Area, and 5 miles for entrance to South Cow Mountain.  You need to go to http://www.recreation.gov/detail.cfm?ID=1235 to get directions to the BLM office in Ukiah.  There you can purchase maps of the area.  On the west side There are other pockets of BLM land mixed in with private ranches that do charge for hunts.  Drop me a PM if I can be of any further help.  By the way excellent fishing in both Lake and Mendocino counties.  Be glad to help you with this too.  Seeing that these hogs can and do get quite large, use enough gun to get the job done.  For hogs I really don't like to go any smaller than 6.5MM Swede.  Lawdog
