When going on Safari, should one add a shotgun to their battery to take advantage of the excellent bird shooting that is available in Africa? Lawdog

With gun laws the way they ae going I would just plan to borrow a Shotgun from the PH along with the shells Packing a shotgun over is not a good idea in my opinion. Unless your primary interest is birds and you have a real favorite shotgun you want to use. Then it's not that different then bringing our own rifle.

Just remember that it should be a double not a semi auto or a pump. If you want to check the laws for the country your going to first before you bring that expensive semi auto or pump over.

I certainly wish I had taken over a shotgun or some solids for my rifles to take smaller game (honey badgers in particular). Since I wasn't hunting dangerous game, I didn't even think to pack any solids. There would have been excellent wingshooting also, but I'm not sure if I would have tried it as we were concentrating on other animals right up until time to leave. Would have been handy for the honey badger though.

Why not just borrow one from the PH? The problem with two firearms is carrying them. You have the rifle for the big game but want the shotgun for the honey badger. How do you pack around the shotgun for these occurances?

My hunters last year shot Steenbok, Baboon, Civit cat, Jackal, fox, caracal cats etc etc. and none were damaged beyond repair with a 270 grain bullet from a 375HH That's the beauty of the 375HH over a smaller bore magnum. They actually work far better on both the really small stuff and the really big stuff along with everything in between!
