45-70 Handi Price and Scope Choice ?

Hello from Georgia,
   I am seriously considering buying a 45-70 Handi with a 22" Barrel that does not have a scope. I can get it for $180 which includes my choice of a box of bullets. I would like to hear from someone who has a rifle like this.
I am interested in the kind of groups that it is capable of with the shorter barrel and what type scope, if any, does well.  I have become intrigued with this particular cartridge mainly because of the history as well as the versitality. Besides that, I don't have one which is reason enough for me to get one. I have also been looking at the Marlin, but man do I love those Handis !! Any information will be greatly appreciated !

For the price of the H&R Handi-Rifle in 45-70 they just can't be beat.  If you have to scope it, a Tasco or Simmons 3x9x40mm will work just fine.  Some guys have just put a BSA, Simmons Red Dot that have worked real good as well.

Ya just can't go wrong with a 45-70 as a woods gun.

the one i had would shoot one hole groups at 50 yrds
and shoot around one inch at 100 from bags
where is mcbean ga? im in athens
there is a pawnshop here that has one that has been camoflauged with a scope on it for 179 it has been sitting awhile to and would probably get it for around 150 cash
any scope will pretty much do for the 45-70 as long as its repeatable

I have 2 of em, one with laminated stock set and an S&W 1.5-6x38 scope on it, shoots 3 shots of 300gr Nosler partitions at 2400+fps into less than 1" at 100yds with the first 2 within one jagged hole. The other one has a Firesight up front and Williams WGRS peep on the back, shoot 3 shots into less than 1½" at 100yds using 350gr Hornady RN and a moderate dose of 2400.

I have one...and love it...Quicks using the same load as I do..and getting same velocities...I suggest getting a Leupold VX-1 2x7x33 and a set of Leupold PRW rings...unless you want a set of QWR rings...the PRW's are about $25.00 cheaper and lock up just as good,but aren't quick release types.You can't get much better optics for it than the Leupold for the money..and you'll have all the eye relief you need with it...wither you have on heavy hunting coats..or in shirt sleeves since  it's a non-criticle eye relief scope..

Nothing wrong with our parent company Marlins...I've had 5 of them...from the 26" Cowboys...down to the 18.5" stainless ported and non-ported Guide Guns...everyone of them would shoot the same load I'm using now under 1" at 100 yards...they are great rifles..and wouldn't hesitate owning more of them...

I am almost sure this has been mentioned before, but just for the sake of it, how much difference in velocity on average is gained by the 32" compared to the 22". I realize there is a 10" difference and there has to be a good amount.
Thought our new friend might appreciate it as well :wink:
