Need Help New Into Fly Tying
« on: March 02, 2003, 08:55:29 AM »
I have been wanting to get into Fly Tying and fishing for something else to do for fun. I have a few books and just bought some materials on ebay. I wanted to know about the Hammerhead Fly Tying Vise. Is it worth the $90 dollars they are asking? please provide any input on the subject of fly tying or fishing. Thank you, Twyman

Greetings,
I would suggest that you buy a less expensive vise to start with.  I have used a Sunrise for a number of years and am quite happy with it.  I believe it cost me $11.95 when I bought it.
The reason for my suggestion is that about half of the folks I have taught fly tying to decided it was too time consuming aka boring.
If, after a season or two you still are into it then it is the time to upgrade if you feel compelled to do so.

Taxmiser, I took your advice. I got a Griffin fly tying kit for $36 on ebay which sells for $90 retail. It has a SUPERIOR- # 2-A FLY TYING VICE. It is easyer for me to buy on ebay than run around looking for things. Wish your were closer. Thanks again, Twyman

Dear Tlyne,    Sounds like you got a good deal on your vise.  I use and like my Regal vise.
If I were you, I would visit your local fly shop and ask about the patterns that work best in your area.    Check out the patterns in your books and get down to business.  The first few you tie may not look so good to you but try them anyway.  Your pleasure in fishing will be enhanced by catching a few fish on the flies you tied yourself.
From there the sky is the limit.   Welcome to the wonderful world of flyfishing and tying.    Drop me a line if you need help.    Regards, Bill

ive been tying since i was in college- about 15 years ago- i bough a kit from a local fishing store and started tying doll flies for bass and pan fish with my fly rod. i enjoyed it so much i got into everything from streamers to small dries and nymphs. i tried to learn every pattern i could and now use only 8 or 10 but tie in different sizes.
during my learning i thought i needed a new vice- so i dropped the big bucks and got a barracuda- and now it collects dust- i like my cheap old one better- its smaller and easier to use it seems. no need for good stuff, just stuff that you like and are comfortable with.
we should all tie and trade some of our more favorite patterns. anyone ever go to the white in nw arkansas?
