Talley Rings - the routine for removal and replacement
« on: October 18, 2005, 03:45:59 AM »
I have been testing out my new Talley quick detach rings and have found that the best way to reattach them is to tighten the levers as if tightening cylinder head bolts or lug nuts: gradual tightening by alternately tightening each lever a little bit. If I do that, the group varys remarkably little at 100 yards. If I just tighten each lever fully then the point of impact changes a few inches.

Questor,

Heard some negative comments about Talleys recently.  Something about that person's new QD rings looking as if they were cast, rather than machined.  Do your new rings look like they were machined?

The looks is entirely remarkable. They are little works of art. The pieces fit together so perfectly that you cannot see the seams. Mine are obviously of very high quality. The bases are of similar obvious high quality. I bought mine new a couple of months ago.

The only thing I don't like about them is that it takes some trial and error effort to align the levers so that they look nice after they are tightened.  However, once tightened, they stay tight.

The Leupold quick detach rings are designed so that you can adjust the angle of the levers after they are tightened.  I use the Leupolds on the Weaver base of a target pistol with great satisfaction, but I have never tried it on a rifle.
