Looking for a place to shoot
« on: October 18, 2005, 12:05:42 PM »
I know this isn't reallly about hunting, but I thought I would post it here as it is specific to PA.  I am looking into some sportsmen's clubs in the eastern Pittsburgh area.  Specifically, I am looking at White Oak Rod and Gun Club, Pitcairne Monroeville Sportsman's Club, Trafford Sportsman's Club, and Logans Ferry Sportsman's Club.

Does anyone have any experiences with these groups? (pros/cons)

Any other suggestions?

The ones that I have named are all within about 1/2 hour drive from my house.  I guess that my minimum requirements are that it has at least a 200 yd. rifle range and at least an outdoor pistol range.  This summer I did purchase a garand rifle and may be looking into doing some CMP shooting in the future.
Thanks for any help you could provide.

My dad has belonged to the McKeesport Gun Club for quite a long time, he has always has good experiences there. He hasn't been too much involved in recent years, though.
A brother just recently joined the Pitcairn Sportsman's Club & has positive things to say so far.
I'll check with them & find out specifics if you want. My brother is hard to get in touch with at times, might take a couple of days!!

 :-)

Thanks Deb.
It would be interesting to know how it is working out for him.  Did he know anyone there before he joined?
No rush.  I am not in a hurry right know as I have scouting to do and squirrels to harvest.

I'm looking at hunting out near Loyalhanna and Conamaugh (sp) this year.

I'd also be interested to know what it takes to be a member of a gun club with a range.  I've had great experiences as a guest at the Pitcairne Monroeville club.

I belong to Millvale Sportsmans Club in Wexford,PA. just north of Pittsburgh. They have everything known to man at that club, including a fishing lake and hunting land and that borders the state game lands. I can take guests if anyone wants to go with me :D Jack.

That's totally my neck of the woods!  I'm not sure about timing, but would love any information on the subject.  Sounds like something I'd invest in.

The PGC has a really nice range out there at the state game lands.  Only 100 yds and that area is still a 40 minute drive for me from Monroeville. (on a good day)

I went out to that sgl a couple of years ago on the first day of small game.  It was like going to Kennywood with dogs.  There were people everywhere.  Everytime I turned around another dog was running up to me.  Shot was raining down through the trees.  After about 30 minutes, I called home and said, "Honey, Get dressed we're going shopping!". :x

Yes, that SGL is way over hunted. I hunted there once, and all I saw was Squirrels. last time for me also, but MSC is a great club. BRG3, I will get ahold of you soon!! Jack.
