Winchester 209 questions
« on: March 02, 2003, 12:50:42 PM »
Hey fellas, got a few questions for ya!
I had a Winchester model 209 .22 rifle years ago that my father gave me and was subsequently destroyed in a fire when I was 14.  I'm 31 now and yesterday I found one IDENTICAL to the one I had at a pawn shop, scoped with a Weaver, for $100.00 cash and carry.  I snagged it!
The chamber was absolutely filthy and the action was slow.  I took it completely apart to it's sub-assemblies and WOW!  Dirt and sand everywhere!  (Looks like it was dropped in a creek).  After several hours of cleaning and inspecting, the action is tight and smooth.  Sometimes when I hand-cycle the bolt, the trigger doesn't reset all the way forward.  Is there anything else I can to to help this one along?  I didn't notice any damage or wear to the internal parts, I just cleaned them and did a good lube on them.  I will try to get to the range this week.  Any suggestions/opinions welcome!
THANKS!!

I did not look in my book but I am guessing this is a semi auto? As long as you did a complete cleaning job and every thing looks ok I do not know what more you can do. I would check the bore for leading since it sounds like it was not well taken care of and maybe never cleaned  and I reccommend Butches Bore Shine, this stuff is the greatest  stuff I have ever used and I have tried a lot of stuff, and will clean the bore in a jiffy.I have  used it on old Military surplus and you would not believe the crud it has taken out. Good luck with your new find and keep us posted on how it shoots. Semi auto rifles and pistols are made to "slam" or go freely on the action so hand moving it may not work as well pull the charging handle  back and let it go forward on its own. If it still does not work like it should than you might need a new spring.  Also a good coat of wax on the wood and metal will help protect the outside  more from future wear. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
