Yep,it can be done. You may want to use a 2 trap set up .If you are using a 5 gallon bucket, you want to block down the entrance a bit.I have not used a bucket, but have set footholds in front of coni cubbies, which were 7 x7.I placed them at waters edge, and ran the coon out into deep water.
A regular dirt hole ,would work just fine---in place of the bucket. You also want to keep your traps outside of the bucket, thats why I suggest something smaller than a 5 gallon bucket.

I think the concept would work well, a versatile above-ground cubby you could plant anywhere you can bed a foothold.
On a larger scale, I've seen it done with a 30 gallon or so black garbage can. Lay the can on its side on location, opening facing the line of travel, and run a layer of dry dirt from in front of the can back into the can itself. Some bait in back of the can, and a foothold bedded either in front of the can or in the dry dirt layer extending into the can itself. Just a big 'ole artificial cubby set for cats, coons, etc.
I don't see why that same concept wouldn't work with 5 gallon buckets or smaller, for small game.

If you have the square buckets, save the lid and cut it so about 3 inches is remaining on the bottom.  Place a foothold just inside the lid so when a coon steps in his foot will hit the pan.  Bait in back of bucket.  Works on coon that won't enter with a conibear set.

       l______l
l__ _ _ l     < bottom of lid left after cutting most of it away.

This is what the lid looks like with the bottom 3 inches left on.
