So I got serious about sighting in my 357 mag, open sights. I cant find paper at 50 yards, and am about 8 inches high at 25 yards. The rear adjustment is as low as I can go. I guess I need a taller front post, but why should I be put in this position, doesnt HR do any calculations to determine which sight arrangement should work or not?

Also, will a Lyman front sight similar to the BC work on a standard barrel, I have not looked closely at the 2 since I put the guns away and started thinking about options on the drive home yesterday. Nother thing, I really like the rear peep sight on my BC, is that prortion something I can buy and slip on the base of my 357's williams sight.

The 17A front sight on the BC is a dovetail sight, the front sight on the .357mag is mounted with a screw. I would recommend the Williams Shotgun shorty ramp and a Firesight of the approapriate height. Late model barrels use a 6x48 screw which comes with the Williams ramp, the older models use a smaller screw which presents a problem.

They do make a Williams WGRS receiver sight for the H&R. Depending on the barrel taper they also make shorty ramps or standard front ramps. Williams has red fiber inserts for it. Marble makes a ramp and either green or red fiber inserts. I bought the Williams peep and but a Marbles ramp and green fiber post on my 30-30. I like it a lot, need to practice a little more. I did tighten up the 50 yard group by at least 1/2. I got a large group at 100, but that was more me then the rifle. Good luck on your choices. I did some measuring last night, and my rear sight point is about .1" higher than my forward sight point (relative to the bore CL) at its lowest setting possible. That makes sense with my range experiences.

Im debating now whether I should just go back to my plans to scope this barrel, it would be easier to gather the correct hardware and be confident it would work out - maybe even cheaper. Does anyone know if HR has other front post heights they can/should have installed.

BTW, 357 mag, 125gr are cruising at 2200 fps (about 1300 ft-lbs). I was impressed, did not expect that much out of the cheapest remington 357mag I could find.

Just cut a .1 inch shim of dead soft copper with a couple of holes in it and put it under the front sight, might need a little longer mounting screws, copper tubing comes to mind as a material.................game over. Larry

I am unsure of the height of the front sight you have now but a front sight for a .22 Hornet is the highest front sight H&R puts on any of their barrels. They are cheap and easily available from H&R CS. Just call them with a credit card in your hand and explain the problem and that you want a front sight for a .22 Hornet. They will understand because they have heard of this problem before and have sold/sent out quite a few .22 Hornet front sights just to solve the same problem. Heck if they are in a good mood, you talk real nice, and are lucky that day, they might not even charge you the couple of bucks it costs!!!....<><.... :grin:

right after I typed that yesterday, I called customer service, taller front sight is on the way. Im giving that a try. They were quick to offer, but said this is not a common problem. I would think it is fairly common, the dimensions are pretty consistent, it would have to be repeatable from gun to gun. Either way, they are trying to get it right.

new one arrived - Thanks to HR customer service

ITs about .12" taller, should do the trick. I had to drill the mounting hole counter bore deeper so my short screw would work. It is mounted solid however.
