how good is the Bush 3200 and rainguard?
« on: October 20, 2005, 09:11:46 AM »
I've had a Leup. VariX III 1.5-5 on my 300 win mag for 24 years and it has performed very well with all sorts of Alaskan hunting abuse as well as close to 2,000 rounds fired.  I've fallen on it several times, and it has survived being rain soaked for days in near freezing weather, as well as  20 below rides on snogos.

But I'm tempted to try a Bushnell 3200 2-7 for a little more magnification and for the rainguard feature.

My questions:

A) does the rainguard really perform in truly cold wet nasty weather?

B) Will the Bushnell hold up compared to the old Leuplold?

C)  How will "brightness", light transmission compare?

D) I have to watch my $$ these days so I'm not ready to go to the 4200 price levels.

I'll appreciate any advice.

3200 performance

Whoever invented rainguard should receive the Nobel prize. I was hunting with a 3x9 in the awfullest drizzle, like somebody squirting you with a windex bottle for 8 hours and the scope performed flawlessly. I went and bought the slug gun version from an on-line auction, it was made before the firefly reticle and has the duplex. They actually use small screws and adhesive to attach the reticle. The optics are camera quality, and the click adjustments move as advertised. I don't now how you could buy a better scope. I wish I could get my eyeglasses and binocs rain-guard treated!

Bushnell 3200

A) Rainguard performs impressively, under nasty conditions.
If the scope is warm enough to melt snow, it is clear.

B) I don't know if Bushnell 3200's have that kind of mileage
on them, yet,  like an old Leupold might, but so far so good.  I have
about 200 rounds, shot under mine, with some usual field
use shock events, and it still holds zero, and tracks well.

C) The 3200's brightness is going to make that old Leupold
look like you were sighting through a fog bank(Leupold) versus
     bright blue day(Bushnell 3200).

d) Save your money.  If I really need the 4x magification range
of the 4200 series, I pay the money, if not I buy the 3200
with the 3x magnification range.  As an example, on a western
hunting rifle, where I wanted to get as much out of the magnification
without an adjustable objective, there I would pay for a 2.5-10x
     4200 Elite, rather than a 3-9x 3200 Elite.

After much searching around for scope brands, where I currently
own Leupolds, Nikons, Bushnells, a Weavers, and a Mueller, I have
settled on Bushnell for most of my scope needs.  My Mueller is
impressive enough at the under $200 price point, that I would
consider purchasing another one, for a rifle project on a budget,
and one that would not see wet weather conditions.  If I set the
rifle up to hunt in wet weather, it will have a Bushnell Rainguard
scope on it.

I am a big Leupy fan, but I have to agree with the poster above:

") The 3200's brightness is going to make that old Leupold
look like you were sighting through a fog bank(Leupold) versus
bright blue day(Bushnell 3200). "

I thought my old Vari X I and II were clear, but not compared to this new Elite.   Hope it holds up as well over the years.

I have a B&L 7x42 Discoverer binocular with the rain guard and the rain guard has really impressed me. If you're in a hard rain nothing will work and Bushnell doesn't claim rain guard will. In light rain, fog, mist, and cold weather the rain guard is a plus. The few Elite scopes I've looked through seem to have more eye relief than stated. IMO Bushnell measures eye relief from the end of the scope not the rear lens as Burris and Pentax seem to.

Based on this thread, I just ordered a 3x9-50 from The Optic Zone, one of the sponsers here. Anybody know what their delivery time usually is? Going to mount it on my 25-06.

I have purchased many scopes from Jon at the Optic Zone - not just because he is a sponsor, but because he truly has some of the best prices and truly the best service.  In fact, the first time that I bought from the Optic Zone, they were not even a member or sponsor of this Site.  I don't know, maybe I have bought about 8? 9? 10?  or more scopes from the Optic Zone, and maybe 2 or 3 of those scopes were before they became affiliated with GBO.  I can't remember the exact time for shipping, but I do know that it was relatively quick, and faster than other companies that I used to do business with before I found out about the Optic Zone.  You may want to call him or his wife - I'm sure they can give you a good ETA.

Thanks, Zachary

I have a cheaper Bushnell on the 25-06 now and am anxious to put the new glass on. Would like to use the 25-06 rest of the the year and don't have a lot of time for mounting and sighting in. Will try to contact them.

Zachary, You're right in your praise for The Optic Zone is well founded. Ordered Monday, shipped Tuesday, took them less than one hour to respond to my e-mail with questions answered. Thanks again.
