Author Topic: Oh help me fellow handi-holics!! (Read 507 times)

I just bought a 30-30 and had it fitted with a hornet barrel. I finally got to go to the range the other day and try them out. Both have the Williams open sight. My problem was that they both hit WAY right! In order to bring the rounds right, I have moved the rear blade quite far to the left, to the point where something seemsWHACKED! By the time I'm done the rear blade sight on my hornet barrel is going to hang an extra 1/8 out of the dovetail! My questions are: Do you think the fact that I have had to move both barrel sights so far left means the gun is Whacked or the GUY shootin it is Whacked!? Should I just order a monte carlo stock and a couple of rail kits and put scopes on? Is this typical of the iron sites...are these calibers much better with scope? My .223 sure is! Please advise...thanks!

Sounds like either the front or rear sight mounting hole(s) are off center, or both bores are off axis in the barrels. The easy solution would be to install the Williams WGRS rear peep sights or scope rails if the bores are centered. If the front sight appears to be centered, the peep sight would be the most logical if you want to use iron sights and would be the least expensive, too.

thanks quickdtoo. Off Center was my first guess...dont have any way of checking other that eyeball (which is usually pretty good) and they seem true. If you use the peep can you still use the front bead or do you have a height issue? can I use my standard "non monte carlo" stock and line up well with the peep?

Hello: I have a Rem. rifle but not a handi rifle with the same problem..It sits funny way off to one side...It shoots well like that....I think maybe they drill & tapped the rifle sights to much to one side or the other...On the handis which I have a 30-30 also with a peep it sits normal after i changed the blade front sight with a dovetail front sight (Aftermarket that is)...This took some smithing and about $20 labor.....An adjustible front would help you to move that peep sight alittle to the center.....and you could maybe take some adjustment out of the front dovetail sight.......Hope this helps! Hunterwinco, That just depends, some have had to replace the front sight, there have been at least 2 different front sights used over the years. The newer sights use a 6x48 mounting screw, the older ones had a smaller screw. Best recommendation would be to try it and see. I installed a Williams Firesight on the 45-70, you can check out the peep sight sticky near the top of this forum for more info on the front sight.

Please don't take this observation personally because I have no idea how much shooting experience you have. Seems odd that the sights would be off significantly in the same direction on both barrels. Are you sure you are holding your rifle level when your shooting? Are you squeezing or slapping the trigger? It is possible that you have a problem with the sights, but if it were me, before I spent any time or money on "fixing" the sights I would have another experienced shooter take a few shots with them and see what happens. Then ask him or her to watch me while I shoot to see if my hold and trigger pull are correct. These guns seem to be more sensitive to canting than others.

K.I.S.S. it folks....

as in most trouble shooting allot of us for get the very basics....Does it have gas, is it plugged in, ect.,....

If you are not shooting your handi at a range with other good shooters, go to a range and ask for some help....Many good ranges will have leadsheds or other shooting devices to use while zeroing in...theese devices can and do help keep the rifle movment to a small amount...

Brett, I would never take that personally!! --lol am a member of a large range here in ME and shoot quite a bit. Ive got my handi resting on a caldwell back at the hinge and a bag back under the butt. The fact that it is doing it on two guns makes it hard for me to believe it is the rifles and not me!!!! I will make a note of the "canting", although all my shots were horizontal just too far right!---kind of like me!

Sounds like your flinching..or...not following thru with the trigger pull all the way to me..everytime I do this..all my shots go right...

Brett gave some sound advice...have someone else shoot it and then watch you shoot ...
