S&W 460 or Taurus 454 ??
« on: October 22, 2005, 07:48:44 AM »
I am going to buy a deer hunting handgun and have narrowed it down to these two.  Looking for pros and cons for each so I can make a decision.  I have shot my friends Taurus 454 and was hitting the mark bulls-eye style with no problem.  I liked the gun specially with heavier front balance and the ported barrel.  Had no problem with muzzle rise.

But I have also seen the ads for the S&W 460, saying accuracy to 250 yrds!  It is also ported and can shoot 454 460, and 45L through it.  Higher velocity with their specific rifling twist.  Let me know what is your experience with the 460...
Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight. My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust;

Picked mine up about a month ago.  Shot  two boxes of the corbon while waiting for my boolits and cases. I find the recoil to be about like my Redhawk 44 with stiff loads, the 44 may jump alittle more than the 460.
The 460 seems to jump about 3-4" off of the bags. Recoil is without torgue, it comes pretty much straight backThe Hogue grips are great for my hands. I have shot about 30 rounds of reloads so far. Groups with the corbon and my loads are in the 1-1 1/2 at 50.  I have a weigland base and a TC 2-7 with  Illuminated crosshairs for night work on hogs. Don't have any blood yet but hope to get out this week. You will need ear protection when shooting with the muzzle brake!!!

Without a doubt, I would get the S&W460. I have one and it is all it is advertised to be. The 460 will do anything the Taurus 454 plus more and look better than the Taurus 454  doing it.  :D JMHO  :D

I went to the range and got my S&W460 sighted in for 1 inch high at 100 yards. My groups were 1 to 1 1/4 inches off the bench. I shot clay targets at 150 yards and hit them consistently with point of aim. I did not have to hold over. I was using Hornady 200 gr. SST factory loads. I have to start shooting it to 200 yards to see how it will do.  :D Like you said it will shoot the 454 Casull and 45 L/C if you wanted. You can't shoot 460 Mag's in that Taurus.

I have a 454 bull it is my favorite gun . That being said I would probably get the S&W if you've got the cash. Faster flater and just as big plus 3 calibers to shoot from it. I opting for a 45/70 BFR for my next one . Best advice buy what you want and don't look back.
