Data for 550gr. flatpoint?
« on: October 22, 2005, 04:51:51 PM »
Was wondering if anyone had some reloading info using a 550gr. flatpoint bullet with IMR 3031 powder in a 45-70? A guy at work wants me to load him some up using smokeless powder. He'll be using a NEF and a buffalo classic. Gave him some that were loaded with 70grs. of Goex Cartridge Grade powder...blackpowder cartridges isn't what he's wanting though.

I have an Old Laymanual that list a load for a 552 gn. cast gas checked bullet for moderan guns. If you`re not loading cast bullets this load might be alittle to hot. Starting load is 34 gns. and max load of 3031 is 39 gns. book says vel. is 1442 fps. This load will be a real thumper, and I doubt that he will want you to load any more after the first loading. You might load him some with 34 gn., 1,273 fps, and he how he likes them befor you load anything heaver.

That was a thought Q. All but out of 5744 though. Plenty of 3031. When did Accurate change to Western?

A little over a year ago, according to their web page....

http://accuratepowder.com/

The closest load to the 550gr I have seen with IMR3031 is from the Lyman 48th for the 535gr postell, 36gr start to 41gr max in the trapdoor level. The 5744 load is the only one I found for a bullet that heavy, sorry.

According to him...that's putting it mildly.  :-)  He can't shoot it out of the NEF. Tried 2 shots...first shot that little 22" barrel hit him right between the horns. Second shot knocked him off the bucket he was sitting on. Said out of the buffalo classic he can shoot around 10 rds. before it really bothers him. Offered to load them down...he wants them as is.

That's great.. :-D   nailed him on the brain bucket and he goes back for more.  I gotta do some family tree research and see if we're related somehow.

HH...he was trying to save face I believe with the NEF.  :-)  Said even after that first did what it did...he couldn't wuss out after one shot. Let the next one take him off the bucket.    What's a kicker...offered to let me bring it home and shoot it...to see what I thought.   I never have been accused of being the brightest bulb in the box...but I declined on this offer.  :-)
HH...the curiosity will kill you and we'll probably be getting a report on your experience with same combo.

Hmmm.... I have the requisite NEF Handi in 45-70... lemme see... I seem to see a Buff Classic, but it's reamed out to 45-90.  Sauntering over to the reloading bench, what do I see... a box of Lyman 535gr Postells.... Hmm... Re7...nope... 4064...nope... 2400... nope... BL-C2.. nope... AH, there is is... 3031.  It's dark outside.. but I know where the berm is.  Be back in a sec.  :)

There is some information on here for the 550gr cast bullets and reloading.
http://www.competitor-pistol.com/jb%20home.html

I have seen a lot of people using them on marlin owners forums out to 1700fps.   I've shot a few garret 550 hammer heads out of my guide gun, they aren't that bad.
