Lived in Oklahoma all my life, and always wanting to make it to Alaksa. Finally made the jump 4 years ago.
Fknipfer, it is the adventure of a lifetime. You will not regret spending summers here. I live in Soldotna (Kenai Peninsula), and during the summer wouldn't trade places with anyone outside. Fishing, hiking, photogaphy, and just plain old sight seeing. There is soooo much to see and do a lifetime would not be sufficient. With the daylight up to 20 hrs. during the summer, the only problem one may have is a lack of sleep. Takes some getting used to.
In the next few years I will modify my lifestyle to living outside from Oct-April and live here May-Sept. For me it isn't the winter weather that is so much a factor as it is the lack of daylight. 5-6 hours dayligh, long nights. For those so inclined, there are numerious winter activities (sled dog races, ice fishing, snow machines, sking, cross county sking, etc.) Finally, year around, this is a photographers paradise everwhere you turn.
