Born in Dutch East indies (Indonesia), raised in Hawaii, came to Fairbanks for college in '66. One of my college chums called me "that Indonesian Dutchman from Hawaii."

Been here pretty much ever since, with a couple of interludes in the lower 48.

The wife and I have made 2 trips so far and planning another one next year. You are so right about where you live "Valdez" I think its pretty awsome, but so is it all. I will catch next trip.

Would love to retire in Alaska, I have enough income. Could buy a nice place down on Kenai Penisula and live good. One problem, wife won't go says its too cold. Been to Alaska three times and loved it. Wife has been each time I went and loved it but still won't go. Kids are gone grandkids in school so no reason to stay here.
She thinks Alaska is a young persons place and she is probably right. Although she won't have to work just stay warm. It doesn't get as cold down on Kenai as it does in the mainland of Alaska but she still won't go.
Thinking about buying a piece of of property down in Kenai moving my trailer and building me a garage and then spending May thru Sept down there and coming home in October. Does this sound like a plan?

You need to get some weather research done on temperatures and show it to your wife. My brother keeps the Valdez weather on his Yahoo home page and myself, the Syracuse NY weather where I used to live.

It is usually colder back in NY than it is here in Valdez in the winter. Summers will be much cooler than Kansas but not bad. Kansas will get into the high 90's. It might get into the 80's over there on the Keani.

Most people have no idea just what the temperatures are here in Alaska. A little research will prove otherwise in the South Central areas.

I'm not sire how that "Frapper" works or what it does. Got it by accident months ago and never figured out how to get it back! Get a message from them now and then and have asked what it is but don't think they read their mail.

Now, born in Cal, moved to Ore shortly after (mom dumped dad!), them mom married step dad and moved to N.Y., them back to Ore. Lived in Tx and Miss just a short while. Three years in Germany, several more in Mont. back to Ore, Colo,back to Ore to Alaska for several years and back to Ore. I may kick the bucket in Ore!

I'm still working on my Alaska fund. "One of these days" an Alaskan moose and I are going to meet. I hope there will be some 60 inchers left. I make my annual pilgrimage to the Rockies every year to elk hunt and someday plan on hunting Alaska. A friend in the military is leaving Sept 1 on a caribou and bear hunt in Alaska. Its hard not to be envious but I hope to see you guys in AK sometime.

If you don't get down and do it it will never get done. So make the plans and get on up here to see the Great Land and hunt. Otherwise you will be like my Dad. All his life he wanted to come to Alaska and hunt. He just never got around to it. After he retired, one of my brothers used his airlines miles (he was about to lose them anyway) and sent Dad to spend a month with me. I took him Moose hunting where he killed his first Moose. He flew in a real Alaska Bush Plane. He rode in my River boat and caught Grayling and Salmon. Then I took him to Valdez (that's Valdeez) where he claims the fish were so thick you just threw a hook out and snagged them. That's right, he snagged salmon till he was so tired of catching fish he wanted to stop. That night as we were cleaning the fish on a small stream on our way to Anchorage, a Black Bear walked right up to us having smelled the fish. Dad just stood there not knowing what to do, I threw a fish head at the bear, it grabbed the head and ran off. We packed up and left. That is the most exciting time my Dad ever had, He now wishes he had not waited so long.

Too damned many people here. I retire in a year and a half and I'm leaving. You can buy my house.

I fished twice last summer and both times were bad experiences. I sold my boat this year.

I've taken a moose 10 out of the last 11 years, most with my bow. Last year I gave up on the second morning - people everywhere. I snuck down a remote trail I've hunted for years. When I got to the swamp there was a road coming in from another direction, a truck load of guys drinking beer and shooting at the cans! Motorhomes parked everywhere!

I pull up to the stop sign near my house then start the wait to get out. And wait. And wait.

The winters feel like 9 months long. We tolerate that 9 months just for the 3 months of summer, then are over-run with tourist and fishing guides.

I've been in Kenai 16 years and I'm overwhelmed with all the people moving in. Real estate prices just took a drastic jump (X4+). Lots of people have sold their homes in the lower-48 and used the money to purchase something on the Kenai.

If you are going to buy, you better do it now.

I live Washington originally, but have traveled for many years in Alaska, mostly the summer months because of my job. I guess I have spent about 17 yrs working up there, mostly in the salmon industry.

I'm from southern Alabama and live here along the Gulf Coast. For the past few years, I have been working in the Caribbean. I just had an interview with a mining company and it's a fly in/fly out from Anchorage to a location 160 km inside the Arctic Circle. I ask them about hunting but said there was no hunting but being from Alabama it would be nice to bag something a little bigger. The money would be good but just not for sure if I can muster the frigid temps. The hunting would be a big factor for me also. I would like to hear from folks out there from Alaska or at least some experience in traveling there. Thanks

Lived in Oklahoma all my life, and always wanting to make it to Alaksa. Finally made the jump 4 years ago.
Fknipfer, it is the adventure of a lifetime. You will not regret spending summers here. I live in Soldotna (Kenai Peninsula), and during the summer wouldn't trade places with anyone outside. Fishing, hiking, photogaphy, and just plain old sight seeing. There is soooo much to see and do a lifetime would not be sufficient. With the daylight up to 20 hrs. during the summer, the only problem one may have is a lack of sleep. Takes some getting used to.
In the next few years I will modify my lifestyle to living outside from Oct-April and live here May-Sept. For me it isn't the winter weather that is so much a factor as it is the lack of daylight. 5-6 hours dayligh, long nights. For those so inclined,there are numerious winter activities (sled dog races, ice fishing, snow machines, sking, cross county sking, etc.) Finally, year around, this is a photographers paradise everwhere you turn.

338...you familiar with RW fish camp? Thats where we fished the river out of 3-4 years ago. Spent half our time there and half in seaward. Never made it to Homer....I'll be back!

I'm similarly situated as Del. I live in a remote area of Prince William Sound and have since 1980. I too have 38 years in Alaska from Erie, PA. and I'm here to tell you that I much prefer PWS living than along Lake Erie. The winter temps here are more moderate than those there. I'm retired now and you couldn't get me to move anywhere else. I have traveled the lower 48 extensively and a lot of Alaska. There are lots of places in Alaska where I could live, but didn't find anyplace outside the State that I'd like.

Oklahoma for 20 years then Mississippi for a year, DC for 6, Alabama for 5, Belgium for 3, Maryland for 3, now Germany for what will be 4.5 before I leave... who knows then... Would really like to try Alaska but not sure. Maybe I can get the AF to send me that way before I retire.

Western Oklahoma here. I've been to Alaska 3 different times and love it. I have a house rented south of Soldotna for this July. Would like to meet up with some of you guys in that area this summer for a cup of coffee some day and a couple of hours of BSing. I have a ranch and hunting lodge here in Oklahoma and the wife and I are going "up north" for some R and R.
