Powerbelts on deer?
« on: October 23, 2005, 01:51:59 PM »
I plan on using 50 cal 295 grain powerbelts on deer this year and wondered if any of you guys have had any experience with them on deer.  Do they hold together and kill quick?  I will be using 90 grains of pyrodex.  Any help is appreciated .  Thanks-444Tsgt

I used the 295gr. copper HP powerbelts 3 years ago with 80 or 85 grs. powder if I remember right.  One deer was a yearling taken at about 120ish yards quartering to.....dropped in her tracks.  The other one was a mature doe taken with a broadside shot at about 70 yds...dropped in her tracks, but I think the bullet might have caught the very bottom of the spinal column.  I really like how easy it is to load them, the cost is what gets me though.  Nice bullet though.

Shot a nice 10 point this morning... 90 gr 777, 295 cjhp Powerbelt. This was my 6th buck with this formula in my Huntsman. All deer went right down. I would say 60% retention. as I found the bullet in the far side hide.

Shot a 130lb 6pt @25yrds 1/4 away trough rib lung &aorta cut in 1/2 at top of the heart. Found alot of copper fragments in the lung cavity & bullet on the far shoulder just under the hide. 150gr retention 1.01inch dia Oval

90gr 777 & 295 HP copper powerbelt

I think the HP mushrooms back & shears off while the rest goes through & mushrooms out more soft lead.
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
