9.3 X 57 in a small ring Mauser opinions.
« on: October 24, 2005, 11:57:43 AM »
I have a opportunity to purchase a Custom Mauser in 9.3 X 57.  It is built on a small ring Mauser action.  What caliber could I convert this to without re-barreling?  It has a full length raised rib, beautiful engraving, but need restocking.  The metal I would say has 70% of the finish but no pitting.  The bore looks good sharp rifling.  What do you think?  .375/06 ?

Thanks,

Not without rebarreling and is it long enough for an '06 case? If so the obvious rechamber would be to 9,3x62. The 9,3 bore is .366" which is too large to allow a rebore to .375" and way too tight to just run .375" bullets down it. I'd say if you want to keep the barrel you're pretty much stuck with the 9,3 bore but then that's not such a bad deal. Should be a really nice rifle as is and even better as a 9,3x62 IF the action is long enough for that.

Bigboar - as Graybeard said, it should be a nice rifle as it is.  And you really can't discount the effectiveness of the 57mm case.  The 62mm case (06 length, or is it 63mm?) would be better but it's too long for the 96 action.  The 9.3x57 should be an excellent cartridge and in a custom Mauser - well, that's a pretty nice package.  Mikey.

...or you could always keep me in mind as a buyer should you dislike that little rifle.  I have a 9.3x64 (its a cannon) and so I would imagine a 9.3x57 would be pretty sweet.  Let us know what you decide to do.

At closer inspection I decided not pass.

It is a sweet little rifle. Greener safety, double set triggers, and beautiful engraving, but it was a full stock, has a horn butplate (broken) and an non-existent crown.  With all that the wouldn't budge on the price.  So I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I have a 94 Swede carbine that was rebored rechambered etc to 30-06. I have fire factory loads through this lightweight sporter but I prefer to handload for it and stay below 50,000 psi. These swede actions are well made and heat treated. I would imagine that you could rechamber to the 9.2 * 62 but I doubt there would be an awful lot of difference in terminal performance but you could use cases that are based on the '06 case. I read that that the 9.2 bore is excellent for big and tough game at moderate ranges. Regards
