300 weatherby and plains game

I hope to hunt for plains game in South Africa in the next 3 years. I own a .300 weatherby magnum. It shoots 180 gr. barnes triple shock bullets very accurately. Would this caliber be a good rifle to take and use on plains game??

Although I haven’t been to Africa, YET, the .300 Weatherby Magnum has a long, glorious and excellent history of being a great plains game cartridge.  I plan on taking mine when we go on Safari.  Adding to my .300 Weatherby Magnum will be my .375 Weatherby Magnum.  And for a third rifle either my .416 or .450 Rigby will go along(most likely the .416 Rigby).  Lawdog

I thought you could only take two to most countries in Africa these days.

While I don’t know about other countries/areas of Africa where the wife and I plan to go, Tanzania, the following is what I have been told.

This is what has been sent to me by a number of outfitters.  My old friend my .300 Weatherby has been all over North America, New Zealand and Australia.  It is going to Africa too.  I bought my .416 Rigby just for Africa and I really love how the .375 Weatherby performs.  That is why I choose these three.  If I had to cut my battery down to two the .300 would still be my first pick.  I would then have to toss a coin to choose between the .375 Weatherby and the .416 Rigby.  Lawdog

while it is legal to take 3 rifles into Tanz it will be costly on all flights both those that originate from the USA an internal African flights.
I take 2 (30-06 & 375 H&H) but on each trip I have really only used my 375 H&H for everything. I carry 180 gr Barnes TS for each rifle, also 300 gr for the 375 that way I could in a pinch use the '06 for anything up to the larger PG such as eland  OR just switch rifles and use the 375H&H for EVERYTHING using different loads ( my 180 & 300 gr bullets at 100 yds group 2" differently,not much of a concern on any animal)

PS IF it were legal I would hunt everything in Africa other than hippo or elephant with the 30-06 and good loads/bullets..IMHO it is one of the most under rated calibers of all time. Also IMHO there is little need for .600 NE with their handfuls of BP in the world of bottleneck cases.

The added cost doesn't matter as I have my reasons9which I have discussed with both the outfitter and the PH) for taking the .416/.450 Rigby.  The wife is only going to take her .30-06 and .375 H&H.  Lawdog

I have used my .300 Wby in Botswana with splendid results. When it comes to the .300 magnums I don't see why anyone would look elsewhere, unless of course you like the classics and go for the .300 H&H. My one suggestion is that you load up some heavier bullets. I've used 220 loads on Eland and Kudu. That's one of the beautiful things about the Weatherby... it is a modified H&H and as such can comfortably shoot the heavier bullets.

Though I have not (yet) hunted Tanzania, Botswana has gotten so expensive that Tanzania or Namibia will likely be my next visit. Most of these countries allow 2 rifles and 1 shotgun, though if the Lawdog has gotten good advice that 3 rifles are acceptable in Tanzania then I'm sure they are.

I took my 300 H&H to Zim this year and it performed great on plainsgame.  I was shooting 200 grain North Forks bullets over a stout charge of 4350.  Worked like a charm.

4 years ago I was lucky enough to make a trip to Zimbabwe.  I brought along two  300 Remington Ultra Mags which have very simular ballistics to the 300 Weatherby which I also own.  I took 2 Impala, 2 Kudu, 1 Zebra, 1 warhog and 1 Leopard all with one shot kills other than the Warthog that took a second shot (tough little buggers).  All were killed with a 180 gr. Nosler partition.  The 300 Weatherby and any 180 to 220 grain  premium projectile is more than enough to take any african plains game.
