357 Max OTT barrel?
« on: October 24, 2005, 04:57:59 PM »
Any body have an OTT barrel in 357 Max?? I love the caliber but  can't get one to shoot very well. I have had three to date, including a VV Encore barrel. Thinking about trying an OTT. They seem to be well looked upon.

I have a VVCG .357 max that shoots just about anything real well....carbine length. In particular likes Sierra 200 gr. RN and a healthy dose of AA1680.

The 357 Maximums that I have had seem to be sensitive to the bullet and velocity used. One will shoot a 158 grain bullet at 1800+ fps very well and a 180 gr Speer rifle bullet at 1350 fps to cloverleafs. The other two are less tollerant of the 158 but shoot the 180 grain bullet extremely well. The 180 grain Speer rifle bullet shoots best when seated to the cannelure into a fired case that has been sized only about 3/8 of an inch down from the neck. (neck sized straight walled cases). This type of loading is over the two inch maximum length for the cartrdge but in single shots it usually doesn't make a difference.

Try the Speer 180 gr FP with H110  and a magnum primer.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

PaulS, I have a couple of questions on the 357 Max load. Are you crimping the 180 Speers and when you say a magnum primer is that the normal small rifle magnum primer or a magnum pistol primer? Thanks , Rick

No data I have ever seen for the "max" suggested a pistol primer of any type. Cartridge operates at much higher pressures than pistol primers are made for.

I have a 14 inch Encore barrel in 357 Maxi from Mike at OTT and absolutely love it. It seems to shoot just about any combo very well, all loadings are more than able to take Whitetails out to 150 yds or so.
180 gr Hornady's over a healthy load of Lil Gun are very accurate as well as the discontinued Remington 150 gr SP with IMR 4227.
Cast bullets shoot very well but are not quite as accurate as jacketed bullets.
Any of the barrels I have from OTT have been exceptional shooters.
Also listen to Hobie when he talks about the 357 Maxi, he's worked with it a lot. I think he could be considered the unoffical 357 Maxi Guru.

My primary deer gun here in IL is a 10" 357 Max TC factory Armour Alloy.
Mine is scoped with a 2X Nikon and I'm confident out to 100 yds if shooting from a solid rest.  I'm shooting the Hornady 180 XTP, 296 powder, and a Rem 7 1/2 small rifle primer.

The small rifle is the one to use - I use Winchester which is a STRONG primer. With these loads you need good ignition to be consistent and the Winchester is about the same as the CCI magnum primer. (mho)

I should have been more specific in my post - NEVER use a pistol primer in the 357 Maximum.

You might want to practice a little more and see if you can extend that range a little more than 10 yds, I know some people that extend that all the way out to 14 yds. LOL
Couldn't resist.

I have a BullBerry 357 Max. 15" w/muzzlebrake. I use it for Deer hunting. I use 180 gr. X.T.P. with Federal small rifle primers. And H4227. A very good shooting gun. Not afraid to take 150 yd. + shots with it.

What kind of muzzle velocity are you getting with that  H4227 load?  I tried IMR-4227 and got great accuracy but the MV was way low compared to my W296 load.

skb, I sent the order form in with my choices, plus an e-mail. Have not looked for a reply yet (I'm at work). I believe its about 4 months, hopefully. When I find out I'll post it.
