Anschutz 54 Single Shot Question
« on: October 25, 2005, 07:26:41 AM »
I am trying to get my feet wet in smallbore silhouette.  I have an opportunity to buy an Anschutz 54 single shot with a 5018 trigger.  The seller has sent me pictures and the rifle looks like it is in really good shape.

I am wondering what these rifles are worth both new and in really good used condition?

Second, would a single shot Annie be legal (for Hunter) if I was to use the action as the basis for a Custom Hunter?

Third, can the 5018 trigger be modified to increase the weight of the trigger simply by changing out the springs or a spring?

Or should I just take the plunge and buy a 1712 right away, either way I cannot afford any of it but . . .

I can buy this Annie and a CZ and still be 400 dollars under what it is going to cost me to buy a 1712.

Thanks!

With a tapered barrel, yes

Yes with a spring kit from Brownells, Mark Pharr did mine.

Or should I just take the plunge and buy a 1712 right away, either way I cannot afford any of it but . . .

1712 would be out of the box, the machine. I would like to know wher you are going to get an action re-barreled AND placed into a HUNTER style stock for less than $1300 (1712's are on sale a cpl places last I saw.)

Your math
54MS = $600
Re-barrel = $500 (This is on the low side)
Stock and bedding, inletting, and new metal = $600

Total for a SINGLE shot custon hunter = $1700 (Low side)

VS.

1712 Out of the box for $1300

If you do decide to go the custom route, please e-mail me first. I can get you into a 54 action single shot, set up as a custom hunter w./ a stainless shilen barrel In Pharr's stock (you pick the color and style) for about $1600 or less. You would even get to pick the barrel length. Mark would build the stock to your dementions and specs (would have to be ordered)

not to get in Senor Chicken's way but i think you'll be happier with a repeater/magazine rifle.

Dave,

I thought about this for quite some time.  I have never used an Annie action but have a BAT 8.5 147M single shot action on my 1000 yard light gun and it is pure joy to operate as a bench gun.  Decisons, decisions  :)

I tend to shoot maybe a little too fast in HP as I always have about 30-40 seconds left.  Maybe the use of a single shot would help to slow things down a bit for me.

Cathy W. shoots a single shot Annie with pink custom stock for her  Standard rifle, enough said :)

But, for the likes of DaveI, who I know has slammed his last 3 HP turkeys in under 10 seconds (I was spotting) one might consider a repeater if one likes to take ones time and then get with the program, 1.5 minutes, before breaking the first shot.  Talk about stressing out your coach/spotter :P

15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, bang: turkey down, 9, 8, 7, 6, bang: turkey down, 5, 4, 3, 2, bang: turkey down, 1, alto fuego, alto fuego :-D
All the best,

Dan Theodore

it is important to use the entire time allotted!  we should have the full experience!!  for the first time in my career i shot before a fellow competitor in a shoot off!  (he had a mechanical problem which didn't allow him to shoot at all)

Cathy's standard is a single shot.  her hunter is magazine loaded and didn't she shoot both 40's this year with her hunter?  i know the conard cup 40 was with her hunter.  not sure about her other.

AFAIK all 3 of Cathy's 40s have been with her hunter. She shot one in a standard match but she was using the light gun.

After making some phone calls last night and this morning I have decided to purchase a new Annie 1712; seems to make more sense financially.

Thanks for the help.
