Which Hornet Bullet?
« on: October 25, 2005, 10:51:00 AM »
Which Hornet bullet do you prefer, the Nosler Solid Base 45gr. or the Sierra 45gr Spitzer? I've only punched paper with both and both have good accuracy. Has anyone used them on coyote sized game? What are your thoughts on them please?

I use the Nosler .224 dia.(I use only .224 diameter bullets in my .22 Hornets due to my Rugers all having .224 diameter barrels unlike some of the other manufactures that use .223 diameter barrels) 50 gr. Ballistic Tip Varmint bullet in my .22 Hornet’s for all my Coyote calling.  I jut get better accuracy with the Ballistic Tip’s over the Solid Base.  As far as Sierra bullets go I get good accuracy but inconsistent performance on game.  Also I don’t care for the more blunt nose design that Sierra gives to their so-called Hornet bullets.  Lawdog

I like the Sierra 45gr. Hornet SP shoots great out of my Ruger using H110 powder at around 2,500+ Killed a nice little 8-point buck last year with it!! Mag-Check

Don't use the 45g Sierra spitzers on game!!!

That bullet at Hornet velocities acts just like a FMJ. It's an extremely tough bullet. I shot quite a few groundhogs with it, a few coons, and a couple foxes before I completely gave up on it for the Hornet, or 218 Bee.

A very good bullet in the Hornet besides what the others posted here is the 50g Sierra semi points. It hits hard, and is usually accurate in most rifles.
