Glad to see ya back!
About a couple of months ago I got a 4" 686 in 357 Mag. I'll admit I'm quite impressed with how it feels, shoots, and best of all, I really go for the 7 round cylinder. Shoots great, haven't tried for groups yet. As of now, I still got almost a half pound of Bullseye I want to burn up. My Sig 220 is doing it's best to help in that regard too.
I think I'll go with W231 or some similar powder for both 38 and 45. Might give Hodgdon Universal a try. I'd like to stick with one powder for all of my low-end pistol rounds, and W296 for my magnum and up pistol rounds.
I shoot mostly 38 plinkers out of it (not more that 700rds all together yet, but close). It has performed to my expectations, and then some, as well as being darn fun to shoot.
Just to be honest, I am a revolver fan at heart. But there is only ONE brand of semi-auto pistol I would be willing to bet my life on...
