Author Topic: Need Advice On A P229 .40 S&W (Read 1453 times)

2001 model P229 .40 S&W satin nickel finish. The owner says it's a limited production model with less than 50 rounds through it. It comes with factory night sights, 3-10rd mags & a HighNoon holster. He does not have the factory case or any factory paperwork. He's asking $600. I haven't looked at it yet because it's a 1 hour drive. Should I consider it?

If it's a stainless steel (229ST) then brand new, those go for around $800. They are a limited production run, only were 300 made. I personally would jump on it... but that's just me!

Total = $605-$615

Excellent pistol, it you want it to use and have the cash buy it. It will never be a collectable.

Thank you BF45 for the informative post. I didn't think the price was a super great buy, but you confirmed my doubts. The guy is trying to use the "limited run" as a selling angle, telling me they are hard to find and go for $800 when you do find them. I didn't believe it and, of course, I came straight here to get some expert opinions.

Jim,

Yes... I would personally only buy it at that price if it is a 229ST (stainless steel slide+frame). If it's just a standard Sig (stainless slide+aluminum alloy frame) that has been nickel plated, then it's not worth nearly as much - what you posted sounds like a brand-new price, not a used price. I don't think you specified if it is new or used, if it is new then consider it - it's probably worth it. If it's used, I'd say look around and you'll probably find a better deal without too much trouble...

As far as I know, it is a standard model that is nickel plated. And, it is used, but barely.

Update: I offered him $500 for the entire package and he offered to sell the pistol with two mags for that price. I said no thanks; I'll keep looking.

iez44, Shoot me an address/phone number. I would like to talk to him. I am not aware of a factory nickel plated gun, are you sure it is not stainless? I would have to do a little research before commiting to a purchase.

If it is a Stainless, it should say P229ST on the slide. FWIW even if it's a nickel plated, with all the stuff with it, thats not a bad price. Nice pistols, I have 5 SIGs incl a 229 in 40S&W and it is a great shooter. I'd probably get it if he would come down $50 or so.

chuckles, I am with you. I am currently Sig poor. I have 11 of them, but I wouldn't turn my back on another one if the gun and price were right.

In my opinion, it just doesn't get any better than a Sig or Sako. Not like make an investment with your stock broker, you always get a good return with a Sig or Sako.. :roll: :roll: :roll:
