if you'll tuck the .270 into your shoulder tightly, like it should be with any rifle or shotgun, the kick will be more manageable.   the .270 is not a hard kicker, in my opinion, anyway.   i've shot it in Model 77 Mark II's and in the Weatherby Vanguard off a bench, which allows 'kick' to be felt more than standing up usually -- and they are just fine.   i'd expect a wooden-stocked Handi to be easy to manage as well.

My .30-06 with 'good' loads of imr 4320 and 165 gr' bullets in a relatively light Model 700 ADL syn' is easily manageable off a bench when held tight to the shoulder.   I'd expect its recoil energy to be fairly higher than most .270 loads you're likely to come up with.

the .270 with a 130 gr' bullet would be my starting point for almost all of North America's big-game hunting.....regardless of rifle.    that in itself helps to keep the recoil down.

take care,

ss'

A .270 Handi provides about 16-17lbs of recoil, a little less or real close to that of a .308Win or .30-06. A Limbsaver recoil pad will tame that real easy if you're concerned about it.

I'll second the Limbsaver recoil pad. I just put one on a 700BDL in .30-06, and put 50 rounds through it at the range last Friday. No soreness, not even a red mark...

I am a little recoil sensitive.   Too many years with a .222 and 20 gauge, I guess.     But I was surprised at the recoil of my .270 Handi.   It was not bad, but I expected less jump and recoil from the heavier than normal barrel.   I have it weighed down with a 3 x 9 Bushnell also.
I also have a Kick EEZ pad on this rife.   But compared to my bolt .260, it really has a sharp kick.   Would not be a problem in the field, but not a lot of fun on the range.     Especially when I was getting poor groups.
But what a difference the Recoil Managed loads by Remington made.   Really fun to shoot and very accurate in my rifle.   Wish the Winchester Power Point regular loads I tried shot that well!

The Ultra-Comp barrels kick even less..they feel like your shooting a 223 with it...at least to me they do..all though a little louder...
