I'm building (actually assembling might be more accurate) a rifle for my son to use when he gets old enough to hunt with us.
I started with a factory Remington 700 ADL synthetic chambered in 7mm-08 that I bought from Walmart when they were liquidating their inventory after the ADL was dropped by Remington for 2005. Paid a little over $300.00 for the rifle...not bad for a new 700!
I had the factory black stock replaced with one in Realtree Hardwoods HD, to dress it up a bit. Also replaced the plastic trigger guard bow with an original Remington metal one. Barreled action was removed from the stock and slicked up a bit, along w/ a professional trigger job. Factory trigger was descent so I didn't feel the need to replace it with an aftermarket one.
Rifle is topped with a Bushnell Elite 3200 1.5-4.5 x 32mm w/ FireFly reticle, set in a pair a Talley lightweight 1-piece alloy scope mounts. I choose a 1.5-4.5 x 32mm scope because, where we hunt, most shoots are taken within 100 yds and never more than 200 yds. (I don't want him shooting any further than that for now anyway) I want to teach him to "hunt", not snipe his target from 2 counties away!
What do you guys think about this set up for a young man's 1st centerfire hunting rifle?
