Try to find a used Kimber or Springfield. I'm sure you can do it, and it will be worth the effort.

you know a few months ago I was also looking for a .45-1911
mostly for personal protection, but also cool factor/plinking...

so after looking around-the prices and what was available around
local here (used and new), I decided to go with the Ruger P345
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=6647&return=Y

Like you said, I just wanted a reliable, simple unit that didn't have
a big price tag

paid $360 at my favorite local store and GLAD I did
just something else to ponder...
Good Luck

You could look for a used 1911a1 and some can be found in newer condition for a used price in the area of $500 of course were talking a 45acp with all the bells and whistles. A used norinco 1911a1 is another good choice too.

Or you have the option of going for a new one and changing the sights to what you want.  A lower end no frills springfield armory G.I. model is around $419 and the auto ordnance army 1911a1 is around $391.  You also can look at the S.A.M. 1911a1 45acp,  the Charles Daly 1911a1 45acp and the Rock Iland Armory 1911a1 45acp too.  All of these are in the same price range of $350 to $500 more or less.
