Howdy all; Does anyone have any information on Hornadys proposed production of new 30-30 ammunition? I wrote them and they responded by saying that they have planned new ammunition but that they had nothing completed yet. I read somewhere that this stuff is supposed to approach .300Savage ballistics.............................................................................BC

I'd think you'd want stouter brass for that kind of performance. The brass from other makers is a bit on the fragile side, when you try to hop up that cartridge. I wonder if they are usin' the same powder they use in the light magnums. I hope you've got a good action in mind, somethin' like a Remington 788.

With all of the interest in +p loadings for 45-70 these days I'm a bit suprized that nobody has came out with a 30-30 +p yet. Heck .307win proves that the current crop of leverguns are up to the task. Check this winchester loading out.

They are coming out with a 160gr. at 2400fps with some kind of soft plastic pointed tip for better balistics down range. I don't know what the barrel lenght was on the test gun. Thats all I know.

Its the Flex Tip I have my reservations about. Just cant help but wonder how a soft plastic tip is going to penetrate or effect bullet flight is it gets deformed? Lawdog

Lawdog, I don't believe the soft tip has much effect on the terminal ballistics. Round and flat-nosed bullets penetrate well enough. They just dont have any ballistic coefficient to speak of. This plastic tip technology is being used on muzzleloading projectiles, and even more recently, shotgun slugs, to improve the trajectory. It is still the underlying bullet that determines the performance on game.

Not saying the Flex Tip won't work, I said I have reservations about it working. I will try them for myself(.30-30 & .450 Marlin) and see how well they work. I remember many years ago the idea of a soft pointed tip was tried and failed miserably. This is why I have my reservations. To tell you the truth I am more interested in the two new loads that Hornady is bringing out for the .416 Rigby. If the price is right it will do nothing but make the old Rigby more popular than it is now. Lawdog

I had the same thoughts. Not like a single shot that does not have a tube. I am sure after recoil in the tube the tips would get a little deformed. :?
