120 gr bullet in 6.5x50mm Arisaka
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:06:12 PM »
Have a Arisaka that my daughter will be using next year for a deer hunt.  What 120 gr bullets do you like in the 6.5mm?

I bought a box of speer and they look like they are varmit bullets.  So I am back to the 140gr Remington or 140 gr Sierra Gamekings.  Finishing the stock, but would like to try the bullet in my Swede this season.  I can load down to 6.5x50 velocity.

Thanks for your opinion!

Mine likes the 129 Hornady so much, I haven't tried anything else. Charles Newton thought it was the best bullet for the .256" bore. Most of the rifles and cartridges I've tried agree, although some don't, some do shoot it at the same velocity as the 120s, and with a BC of .264, it is enough bullet, even for meat elk.  :D

Zcarp2, are you scoping the Arisaka?
If so what sort of mounts are you using?

Nope - she will be open sights.

If I do put a scope on it, it will be a scout scope probably using weaver one piece base contoured to fit the barrel over the action.  Works GREAT on my Argie.

i find the open sights in the type 38 to be very nice. i should look around again, i've seen bubbas go for under $50 Cdn. i 've been using Nosler 120 gr Ballistic Tips in a borrowed 6.5x55 loves them, haven't tried them on deer yet, but they are suppposed to be good

Those 120gn BTs work like blazes.
A mate was culling roos with me and using them in his customised 6.5x55 Carl Gustaf(synth. stock, 24"bbl, forged bolt handle and scoped).
Easily accurate out to 150yds or more and nasty on roos.
It was "lights out" for everyone of 'em!
