Another 30-06 thread

I want to do a lot of coyote hunting this year, but I can't afford a varmint rifle.  All I have available to me is my 22, my 12ga, and my 30-06.  I am also wanting to tan the hides because I think it will be a great skill to learn.

I don't want the super high velocity that breaks up bullets in flight--I just want one that will kill a coyote will minimal pelt damage.  I found this reloading data and was wondering what you guys thought about it.

I really like the idea of only using 30 grains of powder, but using a magnum handgun powder seem a little strange.

Thanks

QuailKiller,

First of all you are going to find that those 110 gr. Sierra JHP are going to have hugh exit holes.  If I were you I would move up to the 130 gr. weight class.  The 130 g. Hornady spire point works OK but even so can still do a lot of pelt damage.  I have had good results with the Nosler 125 gr. Ballistic Tip in my .30-06's.  Keep the velocity down around 2,750 fps. and they don't open so bad.  I use 39.4 gr. of Reloder 7 for 2,752 fps. out of my .30-06's.  Lawdog

No matter what you do your going to leave big holes in hides with the .30-06. Your best bet might be to load heaver bullets and not push them to fast and hope you don`t hit a major bone. Your 12 ga. with #4 buckshot would be better if you can get within 30 yrds. of them.
I don`t know if you can still get them, but they used to make a sabot for the .30 rounds that let you fire .22 cal. bullet in the .30 cal. cases. They never caught on. You could get super verosities with them, but accuracy went to crap past abt. 75 yrds. In your case though, 75 yrds. would double your effective range, and in most guns you could take coyote to abt. 100 yrds.

You're talking about the Accelerator ammo that is loaded by Remington.  In the .30-06 it is loaded with a 55 gr. PSP bullet.  The main problem with this ammo is it's well noted for it's inaccuracy.  And at the velocity it’s traveling it would do more damage to the pelt than a normal 125 130- gr. .30-06 load would do.  You can get just the sabot’s for reloading at http://www.eabco.com/reload02.html or order the Remington ammo at http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/220009.  I have tried them and they aren’t worth what you pay for them.  Lawdog

Barnes makes a 110 and 125 grain solids in .30 caliber.  Seems like one of these would be perfect for you.

Mike,

Many have tried "solids" trying to save hides but it doesn't kiil very well.  Too many lost fur bearers.  Humans OK but not Coyotes/Bobcats.  Lawdog
