Opening day in NH muzzleloader..
« on: October 30, 2005, 01:12:06 AM »
My dad and I drove to the edge of a small farm in southern NH where he missed a doe last year with his shotgun. This time,I would be on the same ridge as he with my muzzleloading handgun hoping something would come within range.

Basically the morning was chilly. It was in the upper thirties and somewhat sunny. Then it warmed up a bit. All I saw were red and gray squirrels. I took a little walk and discovered a scrape as well as a big rub on a small hemlock tree. That got me a bit excited.

That afternoon I sat in the same spot. I waited till almost the end of shooting light. Sure enough, along the trail comes another hunter. I guess it wasn't in the cards to take a deer this day.

On our way home, we saw three deer out in the field by the small farm. It was past legal shooting light but we do know that they are in the area.

We went out the following Sunday afternoon and I ran into two other hunters in the same area. It has been unusually warm so the deer aren't moving until it is dark.

In addition, the area I hunt in was buzzed by a group on dirt bikes and four wheelers. So I think the night was shot to peices, so to speak.

I'll go there next Sunday as now I am hunting Mass with the bow as much as I can( can't hunt on Sunday in Mass)
