2 3/4 or 3 inch slugs
« on: October 30, 2005, 11:27:05 AM »
My mossberg is chambered for 3 1/2.  Do I need to use 3" or 3 1/2" slugs?
I have read if you use 2 3/4 in a 3 1/2 chamber there is a possibility of your slug jumping. Any help would be appreciated.

Never seen a 3.5" slug. May be out there.
I live in a slug gun state. My self and everyone else I know use 2 3/4" there are a couple of 3" fans now and then, but not many.

Best advice, get a few boxes of every brand you can get your hands on and start shooting.

If your Mossy is the 535, or 835 it's a non-issue. If it's a 935 then you may have cycling problems.

Kates,

If you are talking about an 835 bird barrel, DON'T shoot slugs out of it, it is overbored to the same diameter as a 10ga and can cause a dangerous situation with slugs. Not to mention that it will not be acurate at all. Any of the 835 bird barrels I have seen have "NOT FOR SLUGS" stamped right on the barrel. That WARNING is there for a reason.

If you are talking about the 835 Slug Barrel, then they are a standard 12ga rifled bore. That is the barrel you need for shooting slugs.

I shot a Mossberg 500 with a 3 inch chamber and rifled barrel for years and then a Remington 11-87 with a three inch chamber and in all those years I never saw a deer that a 2 ¾ inch wouldnÂ’t kill. :)   The idea is to hurt the deer not yourself.  Unless your gun barrel says not to, shoot the 2 ¾ inch shells and enjoy your self.

I agree with 2 3/4" slugs.  There have been vast improvements in slugs and slug guns in recent years.  They shoot flatter, are more aerodynamic, and much more accurate than anything my dad ever had growing up.  Since your barrel is fully rifled, don't forget sabots. the Winchester loads shoot great out of my gun and kill deer dead.  Nope, no 3 or 3.5s for me.  Besides, trying to find the right load out of those shells will loosen you molars!

I hunt in Delaware and Maryland and never needed anything bigger than a 2 3/4 inch slug. Even black bear hunting a 2 3/4 did the job.  :D

Born, lived, hunted, and worked in gunshops in a shotgun zone my whole life.  Very rarely will you find that a 3" will outshoot a 2 3/4".  Just my personal observation.

Technically shouldn't you be shooting sabot style slugs versus foster slugs regardless of their length from a rifled barrel?  NEF customer service told me do NOT to shoot anything but sabot slugs from their rifled barrels.  She continued to say you'll get a couple of good shots maybe...then the rest will be flyers with foster style slugs.  Her final remark was foster style slugs are for smoothbores.  She sounded like she was personally experienced with these weapons.
