Calling Mitchell, Need Pet Loads for .308

Mitchell, I'll take you up on your offer of pet loads for the .308 Handi.   :D   I'd like some leads before I blow a fortune on brass and bullets. :grin:   I've got Reloader 15 and Accurate Arms 2520 powder on hand, but can get other flavors from my local gun dealer.  I also have a supply of Winchester large rifle primers.  I'd like to stay in the area of 150 gr bullets appropriate for deer size game.

Any other .308 Handi loaders feel free to chime in! :grin:

I don't have this caliber in a handi, but I do in a Savage 99 and a Savage single shot (M190 I think).
 My favorite bullet is also a bit heavier, its 165 and its a discontinued SPEER Round nose. I load it behind IMR 4320 powder. This load is safe in my guns, PLEASE CHECK BEFORE LOADING FOR YOURS, 43.5 grns.

 My father has loaded this for years and my Uncle before him. Between them this load has taken about every North American big game animal. My Uncle was one of the best shots I have ever seen with a rifle. I never saw him take a chancy/iffy shot. But I watched him dump a Whitetail on a dead run at about 80-90 yrds offhand, after my cousin (his son) gut shot it at 30!!!! My cousin got a earfull that day!!

 In my SS Savage this load will group about 1" its not so good in the 99, but that barrel has seen better days.

well my best deer load is using a 165 bullet (hornady sst) the load is :

165 grain sst (bullet has a good BC)
43.8 grains of IMR 4064
winchester case, cci 200 primer.
(in my gun this load is not max at all but in one book i had its over the max so please load with care)



i've only played with two 150 grain bullets.

one of them ,just for fun, was the 150 grain corlokt using surplus powder (BL-C2) and it did quite better then i thought , right at 1.25 groups at 100 yards.

but the other was the sierra 150 soft point boattail (#2125) i used IMR 3031 and VARGET . VARGET did alot better the 3031, best load i got was

150 sierra spbt
44.5 of VARGET
winchester case, cci 200 primer

with this load , in my rifle, 44.5 shot just as good as 44.8 but 44.8 started to flatten the primers so i stuck with 44.5. it shot under MOA with .75 inch group as the norm.

same bullet , case and prmier with 3031 gave me just over MOA (with a few groups smaller) i used 43.8 grains. but this load is (ruffly) 200 FPS faster (says the book i didn't have a crono for the testing) and sure did dump the two deer i took with it.

i hope this helped but just to muddy the water some more heres a pic of my favorite group shot with the hornady load.

Almost just like mine.
165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
43.8grs of Hodgdon Varget
Winchester case, Federal or CCI 200
i got a 1"@100yrd group with this and it may get better once i bed the barrel.

So there you go two proven loads
however given his group better than mine i think i'll switch once i exhaust my Varget and Speer bullets that is of course if Mitchell doesn't mind?
Did you crimp them bullets at all?

Win' brass and primers; AA2520 = 47.7 gr's with 150 gr' PSP CoreLokt's .

These, or 47.3 gr's of Win 748 in place of the '2520', will shoot Small 3-hole groups at 100 yds' with two out of three bullets touching each other from my Model 700.   I'd expect a decent Handi' to do roughly the same.    I do use a Lee factory crimp die on these in a repeater, but in a Handi there's no need to.    The factory crimp die is one of the very few Lee products I'll bother with.

You don't see too much in print about AA-2520 lately, but it was advertised as being in the winner's circle at the NRA National Matches within two years of it being sold in the U.S., I believe.

My favorite load is a mid range load.  I use 39.6 grains of imr 3031 with both 150 and 165 grain bullets.  It works well in two of my .308s.  I have not had a chance to properly evaluate this load in my new nef barrel.  The loads for both bullets is under maximum in every manuel I have.  My rifles seen to like these loads.  Yours may not work with the loads.  Use at your own risk.  Work up loads and watch for pressure signs.
