Huntsman won't shoot Triple Seven Pellets
« on: October 30, 2005, 04:52:38 PM »
Took the Huntsman to the range today.  Getting ready for Moose hunting Tuesday.  Temp in the low 20s, and overcast.  I decided to use two 50gr Triple Seven pellets for the ease of loading.  First shot was with the Huntsman, hangfire, almost a full second delay.  Second shot same thing, third shot again a hangfire.  Switched to loose 777 worked fine.  Will be leaving Huntsman home this trip.

Did you try any pyrodex pellets or just eh 777?  Wonder if the primer or the pellets are not seating all the way?  I am not real familiar with all this ML stuff yet, but have read that you must make sure the pellets are seated to help prevent this sort of thing.  I have a new Huntsmans coming this week, so I would be interested to hear how this comes out.  Thanks

Is there an UP and DOWN side to the pellets...Thought I read something about someone putting them in upside-down.  Would that cause this to happen?

Sourdough...don't leave the Huntsman home!!   I had the same problem with the 777.  My huntsman didn't like it either. Didn't matter which way I loaded the pellets.   I just switched back to Pyrodex pellets and have no problems at all.  Clean-up isn't THAT bad.  I also have some cleanshot pellets I'm gonna try out soon.  P.S.  Them hang-fires are great aren't they, scared the heck outta me the first time it happened.

Sourdough,

The 777 pellets have NEVER been reliable in my Huntsman. The Pyrodex pellets have been 100% reliable however. The Pyrodex pellets have a layer of Black Powder bonded to the bottom to aid in ignition. The Huntsman primer carriers allow to much flame to escape around the carrier instead of it all going through the flash hole and therefore 777 pellets are not a good choice for ALL the Huntsmans/Sidekicks. I am not saying that none of them will shoot them, but I bet very few if any do it reliably. The NEF Breech Plug was not designed to shoot pellets, it was designed for loose powder.

777 loose as well as all loose powders have been 100% in my Huntsman. I say you work up a load of loose 777 and take your Huntsman Hunting. Works for me.

I have to say my Huntsman has never had a problem with 777 pellets (knock on wood). Loaded with 2 777 pellets, a 295gr Powerbelt HP bullet and standard 209 primers, I have shot an honest-to-goodness 1" group at 100yds.
Now that I've said this, it probably won't go off this weekend when MZ season opens here.

Never had this problem with Pyrodex pellets, or any loose powder.  Also my buddies Knight Disk did the same thing.  My Encore and Mossburg shoots the 777 pellets just fine.  Don't want to use Pyrodex due to the fouling and the cold.  Temp will be around zero, or just below.  I have arthritis in my fingers and it's just too hard to work with loose powder, in that cold.  Will be looking for a big bull and don't want to blow a shot due to a hang fire, or poorly measured load.

I got some t7 loose powder, when I got my sidekick. Never was a fan of the pellets. I loike the t7 loose and no problems at all. By the way, I got the sidekick squared away for muzzle loader season, and depending on how it performs, I'll probably shoot it some during the reg. gun season. :toast:

I agree completely with Busta.. When I first saw the reservoir breech plug
years ago, I thought immediately it is designed for loose powder.. I have never had a problem with 90gr 777.... Many dead deer!!!

Has anyone had this problem when using the Variflame and pistol primers?  Thought I read somewhere that there is a more direct ignition and the primer explosion is not so spread out.  My memory aint what it used to be, but I thought I read this somewhere.  I am still new to the Muzzleloaders, so I am reading everything that gets posted and I may have mixed up some of facts a bit.
