Screw size in 94 FG reciever
« on: October 30, 2005, 09:29:35 PM »
I'm trying to figure out what screw size is used in the scope mout holes on Marlin 94 FG.   Its some size 8 but I can't figure the threads per inch.  I have a screw assortment and all the size 8's tend to jam after about 1 turn.  Hate to mess up the threads.

As I had been warned, the Williams Fool Proof won't fit with a screw in aperture if both of the rear scope mount holes are used.  Also its hard to access the hammer, even with the extension installed.  So I plan to shift the sight ahead and drill /tap a new hole for the forward most hole in the sight.

Any comments, warnings or suggestions?  I don't have a smith handy so will have to do the work myself after I get the right drill and tap.

The customer service lady at Marlin tells me the screws are 8 /40s.

I asked her to pass on to management that it would be nice if they drilled at least one more hole on the top of the receiver to improve sight installation options.  She agreed  and said she's been flooded with similar requests.  Would be nice to see if Marlin listens though I suppose every extra hole costs money.

Frankly I wish they still drilled the side of the receiver for the Williams and Lyman sights.  Guess she hears that a lot too.

Well FWIW - thought I share this with folks.

It would be very nice if marlin drilled and tapped the receiver's still. I just D+T my 1894 cowboy competition and next I am going to do my guide gun. Just take your time, be careful, use thread cutting fluid and you will not have a problem. Thru holes are much easier then blind holes IMO. I ordered my drill and tap from brownells. Let us know how it turns out.

I have the drills taps and cutting fluid on order at Brownell's.  I was wondering if I should NOT do through holes to be sure I don't bind the bolt.

Shot this gun again Friday.  What fun!  But I can see I'll really go through the ammo.
