Long Range Handgun Varminting
« on: November 01, 2005, 02:59:46 AM »
My hunting buddy from Pueblo, CO, Steve Hugel and myself set aside 3 days to intentionally shoot prarie dogs at long ranges with our specialty handguns.  The shortest distance we would even consider was just over 1000 yards.  But in reality we started @ ranges just over 1500 yards.  Because of some great conditions, very accurate rigs, and of course some lady luck we made two LR connections.  1590 yards with a David White Built 17. 75 inch 6mm-284 XP-100 (Broughton 5C 1-8 twist,w/ H-S Stock) shooting the 115 DTAC bullet with a Mark 4 Leupold 8.5-25 LR/T with TMR. Mounts: Richard Near Picatinny mount and Burris 30mm Zee Rings (Posi-Align).
Longest hit was made with a Rem. XP-100 6.5-284 in 6.5-284 (built by Greg Tannel) with a rear grip McMIllan BR stock and Vais Brake using 140 A-MAx bullets.  Range was 1800 yards.  Mounts were Elmer Lahtila's SLR Harbor Mounting System which is adjustable from 0-300 minutes and a Leupold/Siebert 20x LER handgun scope.

Pics will come later.  Made the 1590 yard hit in 10 shots and it took right at 40 rounds for the 1800 yard PD hit.
Also shot a MOA MAximum in 6.5-284 and came within inches a number of times at the 1800 yard mark, but never got a dog though.
When set up properly specialty handguns can do amazing things.  We had never shot beyond 100 yards before this past week, and it was quite and experience and we learned a lot things about shooting at these distances.

The XP under my user name is the set-up I used for the 1800 yard PD.

Handgun Varminting-Wouldn't call it hunting

Hunting is hunting.  Don't care is it's long range shooting with whatever weapon of your choice or going after gophers in your yard/garden with a pellet pistol.  Doesn’t matter whether you score or not, it’s the getting out and doing that’s important.  Beats sitting around just a wishing.  Lawdog

That is just awesome xp! Excellent job!

What are the specifics on the Leupold scope conversion? I'm not familiar with it.

Ed,
Wally Siebert can take either a 24x Leupold or a 36x Leupold and convert it to a  LER scope. the 24x ends up being around a 16x and the 36x ends up right at 20x.
He recommends the "D" version scope as they are the newer style and have heavier internal springs.
Mine is the 36x converted to 20x.
Wally's Phone # is (425) 392-3567.
He is a super guy to work with and also the only one who does this type of conversion to my knowledge.

Here is a larger pic of the rear grip XP 6.5-284.
Pics from the shoot itself will come in a couple of days.

Ernie, I've taken shots and shot groups with XP's that I'm reluctant to post, most people would think I was blowing smoke. I'm pretty sure you know what they'll do.
That's some mighty fine shooting. Keep the pictures coming.

Jeff,
I understand that well.  I used to be the same way.  But, in the last couple of years people have seen me shot my SP's in the International Tactical Rifleman's Championship, 1k matches, LR Bower shoots, and our own SHOTS that I have enough witnesses who have seen my daughter, son and myself shoot out to 1k and print small groups that I just decided I'm not going to worry about it anymore.
Lord willing, in the spring it will be more than pics and eyewitnesses to what Steve and I do (more importantly what specialty pistols are capable of doing!).
I'm all for this sport, whether, target, plinking, competitions, or hunting :)
This is not impossible stuff.  In fact, some of it is amazingly simple and can be accomplished rather easily (once you get past the mental hurdles :? ).
What cartridges do you prefer for your LR shooting?

This is the 1800 yard hit.
As you can tell from the pic the dog went into his hole on impact. You can see the blood around the hole. ther is actually more than that if we would have taken a pic into the hole itself.
Steve even stuck his hand down in the hole, to no avail. There was noticeable blood all the way into the hole.
One fellow shooter said, he would have rented a backhoe to get to that dog as physical proof.
I could have shot another dog at closer range and put it in the pic, but my conscience wouldn't allow it (I did think about it though    ).

Here is the looking back pic.  The suburban is just over a mile away.  Hopefully the pointer will let you see it.
