Scope for 45/70
« on: November 01, 2005, 03:46:39 AM »
Hello Handi's
I was thinking about putting a nikon 3x9 on my 45/70. I use it for whitetail and was wondering how this scope or other scopes do. I am concerned with the recoil. My eyesight is good with iron-sights, but with a nice scope I may get an extra 10-20mins at AM or PM. My price range is $150-$250. My max shot may be 200 yards. I will be using factory ammo.
Thanks for any info

I use the Leupolds VX-1 2x7x33 for all my 45-70's...price is great...eye relief is great...warrenty is the best there is...Give or take...$179.00 for the matt duplex model...have mine sitting in the QRW rings...I've had many different makes and models...some cheap...some real expensive...I won't waste my money on anything else from now on...you won't go wrong with Leupold...

If you're considering a Nikon, I'd recommend at least a Buckmasters, the Prostaff may not hold up to the recoil of the 45-70, dunno, I have a Prostaff on a .270, but it's not been shot a lot. The Buckmasters is a highly praised scope and is priced about the same as the gloss Leupold 2-7x33 but with not quite as much eye relief. The matte Leupold will cost another $20 at $200. I have 2 of the VX-1 Leupolds, excellent scopes with 4.2"-3.7" of eye relief compared to 3.6" for the Nikon, which is enough if you mount the scope correctly and mount the rifle the same each time.

Some Walmarts still have the 3-9x40 Nikon Buckmasters #6425(last yrs model) on closeout for $80 if you can find one.

I was gonna say, where can you get a VX-1 2-7 for $179 ?!? Idonthinso.

For .45-70 or similar rifles, I like one of these 3, in increasing preference:

1.  Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4x32mm, with circle-X reticle (have this one on my muzzleloader).  $92 at The Optic Zone, $99 for the camo one.  This one's a great value, and the circle-X gives you lightning-fast centering on your bullseye.
http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3313

2.  Burris Fullfield II 1.75-5x20mm.  $163 at The Optic Zone:
http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=1960

3.  Nikon Monarch UCC, 1.5-4.5x20mm

http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/product.php?group=16&subgroup=10&product=6592

Number 3 has a 50 or 75 yard parallax setting, which is fine by me (they're dubbed by Nikon as "turkey scopes" or "shotgun / slug gun scopes").  Dial any of these down to their lowest setting (1.5 / 1.75) and you should have plenty of eye relief to avoid a bad case of scope eye for even stout level II loads ion .45-70.

Think again! It's the same price at Cabelas or anywhere you look since they can't be advertised for less or Leupold won't let em be a dealer.

I know, Tim, that's gloss; he said $179 for "matt [sic] duplex model".  :)  They're more (as you said above).  Who wants gloss?  Well some do, but not most of us.  Most of us here are hunters, and prefer matte, right?

I've been using gloss scopes for more years than a lot of shooters on this forum have been alive, they've never been a requirement before and still aren't, they're just an alternative for those that choose em. A lot of younger shooters don't even realize that matte scopes are relatively recent in origin. When ya got a gloss frame on the rifle, mounting a gloss scope in gloss rings looks better, to me, but that's a personal choice and one that Leupold apparently recognizes since it seems few scope Mfrs make gloss scopes anymore.   Sheesh, it's like a matte scope is required or you're gonna scare every game animal in the woods before you get a shot! I guess hunters success was never possible before the matte scope came on the market!!!   If that were true in any sense of the thought, stainless carrying hunters might just as well not load their rifles!!!

As a matter of fact, this matte thing reminds me of a recent post I saw at RFC...

Do you remember when....

1.) Wool plaid jackets were still affordable because the yuppies hadn't yet discovered them.

2.) Hardware stores sold guns---of course! And so did Sears! And Montomery Wards!

3.) In small towns, they sold popular ammo at the grocery store. In the tiny Mizzoura Bootheel town my kin live in, we kids would go to the Big Star grocery and get boxes of .22 ammo for like .50 cents and a couple Yoo-Hoos. The ammo was right behind the checkout clerk and they had .22LR, .22Short, .410 shotshells and 16 gauge shotshells.

4.) Winchester came out with the X-Pediter when Remington came out with Yellow Jacket and Viper and CCI came out with Stinger during the hyper-velocity .22LR debut. And Federal or CCI also had a truncated cone nosed hyper velocity that looked like the Remington Viper but I forget what they called that. It's long gone now, too. No more X-Pediters, either...

5.) If a person was a vegetarian, he/she kept it to him/herself. And nobody made special accomodations for them at restaurants or banquets.

6.) You could get breakfast at an honest-to-God coffee shop for under $5.00 including coffee and the tip and have change leftover.

7.) Your grandfather was someone you looked up to and admired, not someone you rolled your eyes at. What I wouldn't give to sit in the porch swing next to my grandpa one more time.

8.) Kids behaved in public because parents spanked them if they didn't.

9.) There were more .22 makers than you could shake a cane pole at---Winchester, Remington, Savage, Stevens, Ruger---and used ones could be had for like $20.

10.) If some man asked some other man if he was a "metrosexual", he'd get a punch in the mouth.

11.) "Cordless tools" were a brace-and-bit and a handsaw. And the wood they used on the handles for those tools was nicer than most of the gunstock wood today.

12.) If you saw a guy driving a Bronco, Scout, Jeep or Blazer in town, you knew that guy was a hunter or fisherman. No one knew what a "SUV" was. You went and asked for a Bronco or a Blazer or a Jeep when you were buying a 4WD.

13.) Barbers really were barbers.

14.) Freight trains still had a caboose. And when you were a kid and waiting in your folks' car at a crossing, you waited for the caboose to pass by to wave at the brakeman and he'd wave back.

15.) There was full service at gas stations. Self-serve was totally new.

One fine type of scope for the handi rifle is either the weaver 2.5K or the weaver 1-3V. They are small, compact, lighteweight and look great on the handi. I would think the 2.5K would be perfect for the 45-70. I have the 1-3V on my .223 handi and love it. The 2.5K can be had for $125 and the 1-3V can be had for around $150. They are perfect match for the handi-rifle.

Quickdtoo,
Thanks for the welcome!! You all have a great forum here-- glad I finally discovered it after all these years of shooting the handi-rifle. You have a great looking rifle there-- I am glad to see someone else likes those scopes besides myself-- I think they are a perfect match.

You right Tim...they can't be advertised for less...doesn't mean you have to pay full retail for them...As I've always said...get to know your gun dealer...if you do enough buisness with them...they will take care of you.I much prefere spending my money here in town...with a smaller dealer...loyalty does have it's rewards..

There aren't any small dealers here any more that I care to deal with, the Walmarts and Bimarts have pretty much run em out of business. Cost of a Leupy locally would be way more than I can get em online, including shipping, but I'm happy giving Jon my business, he's a cyber mom and pop shop!!

Nikon Buckmaster 4x40 on a BC
http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3605

The Buckmaster will stand up to a 45/70 heavy loads.  This scope will be transferred over to a 300 Weatherby Magnumb in a couple of weeks.

I just noticed this thread at MO since someone revived it.....great scope, price is right for someone with a limited budget.....only thing I can see wrong with it, is the large ocular bell and mounting on a Handi, but with 4" of eye relief....

Nope, but I recognize a good reliable optics source that offers great products and service and one that supports our use of this forum. Since we pay nothing to use this site, we must support those that do.....insurance, so to speak....going thru GBO withdrawals is the pits!!!!

But I do a fair amount of business with Jon, myself, just bought a Bushnell Legend 8x32 Bino for my son for Christmas, a Bushnell Permafocus for my grandson, a Weaver K2½x20, and a closeout Simmons 44Mag Mildot scope and some Sig Zee rings, for a little over $500, getting a headstart on my Christmas shopping!!!

Just kidding with ya Tim, I agree with supporting the sponsers and am glad they are here :agree:  I haven't ordered from them yet, but they are very resonable in their prices and I have heard of their awesome CS.
