45/70 guide gun lever opening on recoil???
« on: November 01, 2005, 08:15:00 AM »
I took some carefully reloaded rounds 405 & 420 hard cast and 47 grains of Varget.  At the shot the lever would drop out of the closed position.  No signs of high pressure, primers fine, cases look fine.  Is this normal?  This was the fist time I used the led sled for working up some rounds but I don't think that would cause that??

Shoot it offhand and/or without the sled.  If it doesn't drop out you'll have your answer.  Could be the lever hitting your hand during recoil and/or a weak lever latch spring, or the latch itself is worn, etc.

I had to take mine out, ream out the hole slightly (it had a burr), polish the latch face and reassemble.  Haven't had a problem since...

Hope this helps...but it's most likely the lever hitting your middle finger during recoil just enough to kick out the lever.  Try changing your grip...
Hunting for me is the challenge of stalking up close with a great rifle, your own handloads and the skill to use them for a quick humane kill on worthy quarry.

mine does that too when I shoot buffalo bore 430 gr cast ammo.  It doesn't spring open, but just opens past the locking possition.
