Reloading for Bushmaster AR-15 .223
« on: November 01, 2005, 10:42:58 AM »
I recently purchased a Bushmaster AR-15 with the 24" Barrel.  It is like the Varminter, except it doesn't have the stainless barrel.  Any way, I was wondering if anybody had a good load worked up for me to work off of?  I would like to use either 55 Grain V-Max or Ballistic Tips.

I have a Bushmaster Varminter and it doesn't have a stainless barrel.

The Varmint Special has a stainless barrel

I shoot mostly Federal XM-193 out of mine but 25.0 gr/ H4895 with a 55 gr VMax shoots pretty well out of it too.

25grs of H-335 with a 55gr Sierra Blitz King and a Win SPP works good for me.

Hi i have got the Bushmaster V-Match rifle on order. It has a 20 inch flutted barrel and a BM stage 2 trigger in it. And i am going to be reloading for it. I had a Rem 700 223 and the load i used in it was.
AA 2015  25grs  powder
50gr Nosler BT
Fed Brass
Rem bench rest primers
This load (isnt) loaded to the max. Do you think it would be a load to try out in my Bushmaster. thanks VM

For ARs, I prefer Varget powder. It's very accurate and meters very nice in a powder measure. You can't over charge a case because the powder will spill out before you reach a max charge for a 55 gr bullet.

The most important issue with ARs is the tendency to get the chamber too hot from increased rate of fire.  Varget is rated as an extreme powder, meaning it won't increase the burn rate much when it gets hot. Other powders do increase in burn rate dramatically as the chamber temperature climbs. This will increase chamber pressure and velocity. The result is a loss of accuracy and possible damage to your gun, plus hard extraction leading to malfunctions.

You want to avoid the long extruded IMR powders because they will foul your gas port. Besides, they are way too sensitive to temperature changes. Winchester ball powders like 748 work well provided you keep your cycle rate low. They too are temperature sensitive.

I use 26.0gr of Varget with 55gr Ballistic tips or V-Max. Accuracy is awesome and they function perfect.

i have the best accuracy with benchmark out of my varminter.  i can put the bullets in the same hole at 100 yards.   varget gets me about 1/2 inch groups at 100;  not bad, but the benchmark is definately better.

i have had folks tell me auto rifles arent accurate.  i respond by betting them that i have an auto that will outshoot their bolts; and have made a believer out of more than one person.  the varminter is one wicked rig.  i love mine.
