win M92
« on: November 01, 2005, 02:06:13 PM »
I have a win M92.  The front sight is not at top center.  The barrel has been screwed in about 1/8" to 3/32"  too far past top center.  I want to back the barrel out.  I put the barrel in a vice with bronze jaws, but the barrel turned as I turned the receiver.  I have a barrel wrench my dad made but I would have to make a collet to match the taper of the barrel.  This is quite time consuming.  Any ideas on turning a barrel/action such a small amount.  Thanks.

Hiram,

You can make some quick and effective barrel blocks by casting them from linotype alloy.  Just make up a shallow box tray from scrap lumber and notch barrel supports at each end.  Pour in molten linotype until it reaches a little less than half barrel thickness.  Repeat for the other half.

Another way to make blocks is to use hardwood (hickory, maple, oak, etc) and gouge out a barrel channel to match the chamber area of the barrel.  Mke the blocks full vise jaw width.

I use talcum powder by itself or combined with rosin to coat the barrel before tightening onto the blocks.  Don't be shy about how tight you squeeze that vise.  You won't hurt it!  It's usually easier to use a mallet or piece of 2"x4" wood to rap on the wrench to loosen the barrel and then tighten it back up until the sights index correctly.  If too tight, repeated tightening and loosening will bring it into alignment.  If too loose, you may have to make up some shim washers.

...backing the barrel out can increase the headspace. Depending on thread depth, this could encourage the barrel to continue to loosen.

Why not move the front sight?

I put heat sink cream and wet rags on the barrel and heated the muzzle and sight ramp with mapp.  It wouldn't come off.  My intention was to resolder the ramp onto the barrel.  I bought the Brownell's low temp silver solder, but I couldn't get past the present attachment of the base to the barrel.  I will try the linotype blocks.  I have the linotype.  Thanks
