Received recall 05 Kodiak 450 4x4
« on: November 02, 2005, 03:33:43 AM »
Has anyone else received this recall?
:D It states that certain models of the 2005-2006 Kodiak, Bruin, Big Bear and Wolverine ATVs may have a safety defect. It list the numbers and mine is one of them (05 Kodiak 450 4x4.)
Problem: The boots covering the tie-rod ends (universal joints) may be defective. They may contain a hole for grease to leak from due to being pinched when installed or adjusted.
Correction: They (any authorized dealer) will install a new universal joint kit on your ATV at no cost to you.
I called the closest dealer to me to make an appointment, he said It would be a while. He is having trouble getting the parts from the manufacturer due to an extremely heavy demand. Can't keep up with all the recalls at the same time. I'm sure the fact that I didn't buy the bike from him has something to do with the wait but that's understandable(customers first).
Just wanted to pass it along to you guys and gals incase you didn't get this letter yet.

Haven't heard anything from them on my Bruin 350 two wheel drive. Does it only affect 4x4 models?

NO, it also includes 2WD machines Mr. Graybeard
According my letter, for the Bruin 350 2WD the affected model numbers are (YFM350BAT and BAV).

CPSC, Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. Recalls ATVs
Recall Information for Yamaha Motor Corp Usa Atvs
Date: 11/8/2005
Reason: The protective boots covering the steering system’s tie-rod ends (universal joints) on the recalled ATVs could be pinched during installation or adjustment, cutting a hole in the rubber.

Distribution: Nationwide.

WASHINGTON , D.C.
- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. Name of Product: Yamaha Bruin 250, Bruin 350 4WD and 2WD, Big Bear 400, Kodiak 400, Kodiak 450, and Wolverine 450 ATVs.

Units: About 70,000

Manufacturer/Distributor: Yamaha Motor Corporation U.S.A., of Cypress, Calif.

Hazard: The protective boots covering the steering system's tie-rod ends (universal joints) on the recalled ATVs could be pinched during installation or adjustment, cutting a hole in the rubber. If this occurs, grease could escape, and contaminants such as sand or mud could get into the assembly through the hole, causing accelerated wear. This could result in abnormal steering free play. If the ATV continues to be operated without repair, the ball and socket portion of the tie-rod end could wear to the point that they separate, resulting in loss of steering control, which could cause a vehicle crash with injury or death.

Incidents/Injuries: Yamaha has received no reports of incidents or injuries.

Description: Yamaha has announced a voluntary recall of certain 2005 and 2006 Yamaha Bruin 250, Bruin 350 4WD and 2WD, Big Bear 400, Kodiak 400, and Kodiak 450 ATVs, and certain 2006 Wolverine 450 ATVs.
