55 grain softpoints will do the job if you do yours. I don't purposely take a .223 out after deer, but I have killed a couple of does with it when it was the only gun at hand and an opportunity came about. Both were instant kills, too.

Everyone please note were the poster is from. The deer down there aren’t that big. (no offense intended)

If I was to use a 223 for Deer, then I would buy the best constructed bullet for the job.
Bullet weight no less than 53 grains, if you hand roll, I would use the Barnes Triple-Shock X-Bullets 53 Grain.

From what I’ve read this bullet is constructed to the job.

Hope this helps out.

Even though the deer are small I personally would not go below a 243. But if a 223 was all I had, I would use a good quality bullet not meant for varmints.  :D

A heavy varmint bullet placed just behind the shoulder will explode in the lungs and put the deer down on the spot. Likewise in the neck. Keep it under 100 yards for the .223. If one does not have the skill and self-control to do this, I don't think he should use this round, regardless of bullet type. If someone is set on a .22 centerfire, the .22-250 is a much better choice.

not to hijack a thread but This weekend our local paper had a disturbing article concerning a 223. A kid 14yrs old shot a 10pt 200lb buck with a 223 it was connected to a 180lb 9pt that had fought to its death was this the diturbing part no. The part that bothered me was that  the shot(s) were taken at 250 - 300 yds come on this kid is average size I assume a newer hunter and you advise him to take a 250+ yrd shot. THis is setting him up for failure  and not teaching him about taking a good shot the kid shot dad shot 3 times kid shot again hit deer in hip then once they got closer took another shot to finish him off. I just think this would have been an oportunity for a dad to teach his son a lesson rather than aw hell just throw bullets until you hit it. sorry for the rant

If a .223 Rem. was all I had I would trade it off for the first rifle of a caliber .243 or larger.  I have seen to darn many deer wounded and lost because of someone using a .22 centerfire.  I tried it with a .220 Swift.  No thanks, not ever again.  Lawdog

I don't know the hunting laws of other states but, hunting deer in Michigan with a 223 will get you a jail term.  Shot placement on a moving deer is hard enough, without a round that will put 'em down.

A centerfire cartridge is all that is required in TX.     Standing, close,  broadside shots only with softpoints.

223 allowed in Oklahoma................I don't use them for deer, Have taken a doe at 400 steps using a 22-250 60 grain. It ran about 150 yards before dying. Only rifle I had that year. This year will be using a 15" 7-08 Encore, 7-08 Handi and 7-08 Stevens 200................

Probally ought to keep my mouth shut but I wouldn't even recommend a 243 for deer. Sure they do a good job but then so will a 22LR. Anyone want to jump up and reccommend that? There are lots of cartridges that perform well beyond reasonable. This is one of those things where someone jumps up and tells us of all the deer they have killed with a 223 or even 243 but no one tells of the failures. I've owned several 243 and 223, I've even killed deer with both and they strike like lighting.....If,if,if,if ect, ect, ect.

Nosler hasn't helped much in my feelings, they make a .224 dia partition bullet. I'm not only sure it will work but also that a 50gr or heavier will work as well....If,if,if!

I think that to often we speak of things for the sake of discussion that is better left to private discussion among those that KNOW the "ifs".

It IS LEGAL to use a 223 on deer in Michigan in non-shotgun only zones.  Further, the 223 WILL put down a deer. Shot placement is the key, as it is with any caliber.  MI VHNTR
