7-08 or 7x57?
« on: November 02, 2005, 01:24:27 PM »
I am thinking about a 7 mm Encore barrel for fun shooting.
I have been offered a 7-08 on a trade but I know little about this round.
I already have a 95 mauser in 7 x57 so I am set up to reload for this round.
What will be better out of a 15 inch encore barrel?

I really like my 15" SS Encore with the 7mm-08 barrel. Very good accuracy and recoil is acceptable. Great deer round.

I have the 7-08 in a 15 inch Encore barrel, recoil is very reasonable and it can take Whitetail sized animals probably as far as most people can shoot. I think the 7-08 would be slightly more efficent than a longer round like tha 7x57 in a short barrel. If you wanted a 7x57 in the 15 inch Encore I believe it would have to be a Custom barrel but not real sure about that. I usually grab my 7-08 barrel over the 308 barrel when I want to whack an Axis deer over here, just like it better.

I also have the 7mm08 15" and love it!  I probably shoot this one the most so the recoil doesn't bother me at all but I don't think it was bad when I first started shooting it either.  I have taken deer, wood chucks and a coyote with no trouble.  I can't comment on the 7x57 as I know nothing about that round.

Good Luck.

The reason I am looking at the 7x57 is I already am set up to reload for it as I have a 96 mauser in 7x57 in the save. since this barrel will be just for fun shooting  i should be able to use the same  rounds for both

If anyone knows if someone wants to trade a 243 winchester for a 7 mm encore barrel let me know

If you handload, the 7x57 will be virtually indistinguishable from the 7-08.  Case capacities are very close - the 7x57 actually holds about 2 grains more water - so performance will be identical for any practical purpose.

Since the 7x57 barrel will likely be custom and cost more, is this really the most economical route?  The only difference in loading for the 7-08 will be a set of dies (all else is the same - powder, bullets, primers, shell holder), and decent dies can be purchashed for under $30.  I'm certain that the premium for a custom barrel versus a factory one will be more than $30.

In a 15" barrel, definitely go with the 7mm-08!  I honestly don't think you'll see and true difference between the two, other than cost.
